PACKERS: Datone Jones is latest DL bust drafted Topic

Scott Wells has lost his spot as the starting center, replaced by Jason Spitz. This means that Josh Sitton will start at right guard. Allen Barbre is the first choice to replace injured (and still unsigned) right tackle Mark Tauscher.

Free agent OL Duke Preston (formerly of Buffalo) was released today.. this leaves Wells as the only real option to play center if Spitz gets hurt, which would seem to contradict the prevailing wisdom that Wells will be traded to a team needing OL help (Seattle named in particular).

First string continues to look good, both on offense and defense, and the Packers hold off Arizona 44-37 to improve to 3-0 in exhibition games.

Greg Jennings early after taking a blow to the head but it does not appear to be serious.

Backups look poor in exhibition finale against Tennesee, though Brian Brohm finally resembles a professional quarterback for the first time in his brief career. He may have saved his spot on the roster, though it's likely the Packers would have held onto him barring a complete meltdown last night.

With final cuts due Saturday, there is talk that the Packers are shopping some bubble players like OL Tony Moll, S Aaron Rouse, S Charley Peprah. Scott Wells might also be on the block but the team would want a good return to give up their only experienced backup at center.

Bums...all of those players you listed are bums and have absolutely no trade value.

Brohm did not save his job after all, one of the more surprising cuts made by the Packers on Saturday.

Also cut was 2009 fifth round draft choice Jamon Meredith, a good athlete who shows no interest in football. Another surprising cut was safety Anthony Smith, signed as a "street" free agent this winter. Smith had experience in the 3-4 from Pittsburgh but apparently his knowledge did not outweigh his physical shortcomings.

Undrafted rookies Tyrell Sutton (RB-Northwestern) and Cyrill Obiozor (LB) were also cut. Sutton may make it through waivers, Obiozor is likely to get picked up.

The Packers kept all three fullbacks for now but it's unlikely they will go into the season with all three.

You forgot you traded for Derrick Martin. Solid player. Better than that POS Frank Walker that the Ravens got from the Packers last year.

Other moves today:

Kregg Lumpkin and Cyril Obiozor added to practice squad.

Tyrell Sutton claimed off waivers by Carolina.

Brian Brohm has cleared waivers but is talking to other teams as well before deciding which practice squad he wants to be on.

Jamon Meredith is talking to both Packers and Buccaneers before picking a practice squad.

Another surprising cut yesterday was WR Ruvell Martin, who was let go in favor of Brett Swain. While Swain may be a better special teams player, Martin was the team's only "big" receiver and was valued for his blocking ability.

Justin Harrell, Pat Lee and Charlie Peprah were among players put on injured reserve.

Brohm, Meredith added to practice squad.

And, surprisingly, Obiozor added as well. Didn't think he'd clear waivers.

OH HELLS YEAH.

Not a well-played game but S-W-E-E-T to win it like that.
