Season 29 ODAC Conference Tournament 1st Round Recaps

Guilford def. Roanoke (110-86)

Quakers dominate 2nd half to top Maroons

Guilford struggled defensively to limit Roanoke in the first half holding just a five point lead and seeing most of the statistics being equal. The second half was a different story as the Quakers dominated the boards and began forcing more turnovers. Guilford ended the game doubling up the Maroons in rebounds, but allowed Roanoke to shoot over 50% for the game. Christopher Chaplin lead all scorers with 23 points and Jerry Jenkins added 21 for the Quakers. Daniel Andersen lead the Maroons with 15 points.

Washington & Jefferson def. Emory & Henry (78-72)

Presidents survive close call

Washington & Jefferson seemed to be in control against Sim-coached Emory & Henry but watched their lead evaporate late into a tie at 72 with just 1:22 to go. The Presidents recovered though to score the last 6 points of the game to advance to the quarterfinals. W&J was only able to force 4 turnovers for the game, but did hold a large 50-27 rebounding edge. Gino Kanode lead the Presidents with 16 points and conference player of the year Robert Franklin added 15. Devin Bell scored a game 18 points for the Wasps who were held to 38% from the field.

Randolph-Macon def. Hampden-Sydney (63-46)

Yellow Jackets start out strong and roll to victory

Randolph-Macon came out firing against Hampden-Sydney and built a large halftime lead, 40-22, on the strength of a 11-0 edge in points off turnovers. The Yellow Jackets used their advantage in depth as their bench, lead by Sean Roberson and Robert Jacobs, held a 28-14 edge over the Tigers bench. David Humphrey lead all scorers with 12 points and Richard Mayweather added 11 for the Yellow Jackets. John Taplin lead the Tigers with a meager 9 points.

Bridgewater def. Bethany (64-56)

Eagles hold off Bison charge

Bridgewater kept steady pressure on Bethany winning both halves by the same margin to advance despite a lackluster effort from the foul line. The Eagles struggled to just 46.2% from the line but went there often enough to match Bethany in FTs made and held on late for the eight point win. Walter Galloway and Darrell Dietrich lead the Eagles with 13 points apiece and James Ames added 11. Arthur Ward lead all scorers with 17 points and Peter Leahy added 16 for the Bison in the loss.

Virginia Wesleyan def. Bridgewater (76-69)

Marlins rally late to advance to semis

Virginia Wesleyan held a lead for much of the game, lost steam late in the 2nd half, but recovered over the last four minutes to post a 7 point win. Bridgewater used a 41-31 rebounding edge to take a 58-53 lead at the four minute mark. The Marlins finally heated up from deep as Danny Ardoin hit one of his 3 three-pointers and VW used a 15-5 edge in points off turnovers to rally for the win. Ardoin lead all scorers with 22 points and Joseph Ruth added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Marlins. James Gary poured in 16 points for the Eagles who will await word from the selection committee to see what postseason tourney they will be playing in.

Guilford def. Washington & Lee (83-73)

Quakers upend #2 seed Generals

Guilford turned 19 W&L turnovers into a 16-6 advantage in points of turnovers and made just enough free throws to eliminate the Generals. The Quakers survived an excellent night from the line by W&L as the Generals buried 89% of their free throws, but they struggled from deep missing all six three-pointers in the second half on their way to 2-11 for the game. Guilford turned 19 turnovers into a 16-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Christopher Chaplin scored a game high 22 points and Jamison Truman added 11 points off the bench for the Quakers. W&L was lead by Melvin Morant's 14 points and Danny Lindemann added 13 points in the loss.

Eastern Mennonite def. Washington & Jefferson (99-89)

Presidents unable to slow top seeded Royals

Eastern Mennonite came out blazing and didn't let up shooting 72% from the field in the first half and 63% for the game in holding off a Washington & Jefferson squad that stayed surprisingly close for not playing much defense. The Royals dominated in the paint holding a 53-41 edge in the post. Mennonite was lead by centers Ted Clarke with 20 points and Porter Andrews with 19 points. W&J was lead by Jeffrey Marvin's 16 points.

Lynchburg def. Randolph-Macon (58-47)

Hornets hold Yellow Jackets in check down the stretch for win

Lynchburg and Randolph-Macon both struggled in the second half combining for 8 made field goals and the Hornets did just enough to pull away for the win. The Yellow Jackets only managed two points over the last 5:45 which made the difference in a very evenly matched game. Arnold Hawley and Victor White lead the Hornets with 10 points apiece. David Humphrey lead all scorers with 12 points and Amos Hawk added 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss for Randolph-Macon.

Eastern Mennonite def. Guilford (69-55)

Foul line determines Royal victory over Quakers

Eastern Mennonite used a strong effort from the foul line to pull away from Guilford who struggled at the charity stripe. The first half was a tightly contested game and was evenly played, but the second half was another story. Mennonite dominated the boards to the tune of 39-23 which lead to numerous free throw opportunities of which they converted 83%. Guilford had their chances but only managed to hit a paltry 59% from the line and struggled from beyond the three-point arc as well, hitting just 3-16 for the night. Ted Clarke lead the Royals with 16 points, Scott Hodgkins added 14, and Porter Andrews added 12 points. Jerry Jenkins lead all scorers with 17 points and William Kelsch added 14 points in the losing effort for the Quakers.

Lynchburg def. Virginia Wesleyan (86-85)

Hornets come from behind to knock off Marlins

Lynchburg rallied late outscoring Virginia Wesleyan 11-5 over the last three and a half minutes to advance to the ODAC title game. The Marlins started out strong going into the half ahead 44-37 and continued to hold the lead until their poor free throw shooting finally caught up with them. VW only hit 51.9% from the line. The game ultimately hinged on a controversial foul call at the buzzer that allowed Timothy Adkins to go to the line and convert the second of two free throws to win the game. Arnold Hawley scored a game high 21 points, James Ogara added 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Jeffrey Ornelas pitched in 15 points for the Hornets. VW's Danny Ardoin poured in 20 points including a three to tie the game late and Joseph Ruth added 15 points also hitting a late bucket to tie the game before Adkins' heroics.

ODAC Season 29 Conference Tournament Final Recap

Eastern Mennonite def. Lynchburg (81-78 (OT))

Hornets fold down the stretch again and fall to Royals in OT

In their last meeting, Lynchburg held a lead late and watched in despair as Mennonite tied it and then dominated the OT session en route to a 81-65 win. The championship game had a similar script as Lynchburg failed to hit key free throws down the stretch and watched helplessly as the Royals' Scott Hodgkins buried a three with 4 seconds to claim the title. Hodgkins lead all scorers with a tournament high 23 points on 5 of 12 three-pointers and got help from teammates' Raymond Esteban's 17 points and Ted Clarke's 14 points. The Hornets were lead by twin towers James Ogara and Eric Bates who each scored 18 points, had 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks apiece.

The first half saw the Hornets take control about 8 minutes into it pulling away in an 8-0 run that eventually gave Lynchburg a 10 point lead. Mennonite closed the gap late on a Hodgkins three to trim the lead to two before Ogara knocked down a pair of free throws on Porter Andrews' 3rd foul of the half to go into intermission with a 35-31 lead.

The Royals quickly responded in the second half erasing a five point deficit to take the lead. Lynchburg was able to regain the lead and pulled back in front by seven as Emilio Fernandez hit 1 of 2 free throws with five minutes to play. It was still seven with three and a half minutes to play as Jeffrey Ornelas stepped to line after being fouled on a jumper, but he failed to connect on either attempt. On the Hornets next possession still holding that seven point edge, Victor White was fouled on the jumper, but he too missed both attempts setting the stage for another Lynchburg fold. Hodgkins and Esteban hit threes around Ornelas hitting 1-2 free throws to cut it to two with just 2 minutes remaining. Ornelas was called for traveling, Bates got a steal, but Arnold Hawley also traveled turning the ball back over to the Royals. Jerry Charney tipped in an Esteban miss to send it to overtime.

In the extra session, the Hornets kept it close and seemed to be in good shape as an Ogara lay in put Lynchburg up two with one minute to play, but Charney showed up again tipping in a McAbier miss to tie it. After a Hawley miss, Hodgkins buried a three with 4 seconds . James Jackson's desperation three from the corner was off the mark and the celebration began for EMU. The win leads to a #1 seed for the Royals, while Lynchburg drew a surprisingly low #5 seed for their efforts.
