sorry, no sitemail + no schedule - didn't know it was my pick.

I was going to be a good little boy and pick the defensive compliment that my backcourt needed. But, the two guys I was considering - Moncrief and Dumars (RIGHT BEFORE ME) got picked.

So screw you defense. I have 4 excellent defenders already. And honestly, most of the pgs in the league don't scare me too much. I can grab a perimeter defender in another round.

What I would like is another explosive athlete. Lebron really doesn't have anyone to run the court with him atm. Pierce can hit 3s in trasition.. which is nice. But Moses and DeBusschere are not going to be out finishing on the break alot. So, with that said -

David "Skywalker" Thompson

He's small for a sg/sf (really about 6'2" though listed at 6'4") but I'm going to put him on point guards or just the weakest perimeter player on D. He was a great athlete.. properly motivated on a championship contender I think he could play solid defense - wasn't something really stressed on the teams he played for.

He is not going to hit alot of 3s but he had a very good midrange jumper. And most importantly - he can run and finish on the break. This guy and Lebron running the break together is going to be much like D. Wade and Lebron in Miami - the difference? We are going to run on this team.  His APG numbers are pretty low but his AST% are actually very good - enough to show he will give it up and not be a total blackhole on offense.

He's a 5 time all-star, hall of famer, and mj's presenter to the Hall of Fame.

Are we going 8 rounds?  this will take another week.
I think to even out things we should go 2 players next round and 1 the final round.  Just a thought.

Not going to a schedule was a bad move.  This is just for fun and at this point, we are prolly not all seeking the same guy.  I could care less about getting skipped at this point.  There is not $10 riding on it ya know?  Let's get this rolling before we croak of old age.

I agree with the schedule thing, otherwise I may just forget about this... Why are we doing 8 rounds? Why not 6? or 7? If we are going to have backups, why not have one for each position? 8 seems kind of an arbitrary number.
Usually when I've participated in mock drafts of this sort (on other sites) we've gone 10 rounds, but it takes a long time.

If we're not doing that, then I do like the idea of 8 since it allows you to build a core rotation...three bench players, if you pick smartly, should be sufficient to back up the five starters.

I was envisioning that when the draft was complete we could each post rotations with minute allocations at each position, and game strategies (e.g., fast break or half-court, who's playing what role...).  That would inform the voting.
Brad,
I propose that you take over leadership of this. I like your ideas but so many people are fed up with snydpie that I'm not sure its going to finish with him at the helm. Noone will argue with you making a few decisions. I am more than willing to continue to help updating/running things.

COUP!

Interesting!  One of my favorite players as  kid.  Growing up in Denver, I saw him play a few times alongside Issel, English, etc.  He really gave the impression of being able to score at will, however  he wanted.  In one game against the Cavaliers, fans were calling out types of dunks when he got the ball.  He'd usually pull them off, with frustrated Cleveland players hanging on him.

48" vertical - when people start talking about how much more athletic guys are today I always think of the fact that he and the Doctor were running 40 years ago

Insane.  And Thompson had famously small hands...he used to curl his arm around the ball to control it for the slam.

for anyone who doesn't look at my other thread.. this is hilarious

In the last 24 hours we have made 7 picks. If we don't adopt a schedule today, I am done. I go back to teaching full-time next week and my interest in this is drying up.

I'm not the best at these, just giving quick thoughts on what I see. I may be way off on some. Will finish the rest later today.

  • The best vertical jump (no step) result from the 2011 NBA pre-draft combine camp was 36.5 inches (92.7 cm) by Iman Shumpert (see more 2011 NBA combine results).
  • The best vertical (no step) result from the 2010 NBA pre-draft combine camp was 32 inches (81.3 cm) by Wesley Johnson (see more 2010 NBA combine results).

I think if steelers takes the right guy here.. I will LOVE the style of his perimeter players. Here's hoping.. cause this guy deserves a home!

Just going with your point about how today's athletes don't blow away guys like Thompson. Good info on there.
