Chris Rock says being a Yankee fan is like "cheering for Steve Jobs to win the lottery."

What is being a Raider fan like?

The ESPN ticker last night told me that the Red Sox' chance of making the playoffs has decreased from 66% to 36% after their 0-6 start.

Do you buy that?

Defending Al Davis' personnel moves is like defending Obama's fiscal responsibility.

I was looking at Sports Illustrated's 2011 MLB preview issue in the waiting room at my doctor's office yesterday.  In the issue, there was an overhead view of Roy Halladay in mid-pitch.  The ball was still in his hand, but his right foot had pulled around 6" or so in front of the rubber.  Doesn't the foot need to be in contact with the pitching rubber at release?  If not, then what exactly is the rule?

No, I don't.   If the Sux take 2 of 3 from the Yanks this weekend, and with Hughes throwing 67 MPH and Nova being young it's entirely possible, the whole layout for the East changes.   A brutal Sux beatdown this afternoon would be awesome.

I'm sure if I looked up the rule, it would state that the foot must be in contact with the rubber at time of release.   But, having played baseball for many years and watched it even more, I know that the pitcher places his foot against the front of the rubber and pushes off.  Depending on the motion and release point, he's not always going to be touching it.    If he was doing some crazy crow hop, they'd call it.   As it stands, they don't.

Kind of like the phantom double-play at second base?  As long as it's not blatant, no-big deal?

4/8/2011 10:52 AM
Pretty much.   It would be funny to see a manager come out and bust balls because the pitcher's foot is not touching the rubber when he releases a pitch.

tec seems obsessed with touching a rubber, especially if it's not his.

Surprised?

Not so much.

Besides the ancient catcher that I asked you about a few weeks ago, I have two under-30 catchers who have combined for nearly 400 big league homers and over 1100 RBI. The 29-year old just returned from a 34-day stint on the DL (first significant injury of his career). This morning the 28-year old tore his hammy, now out 187 days (first signifcant injury of his career).

Really unlucky or lucky that they aren't both out at the same time? (yet)

It's usually about the health ratings.    If they're low, you're lucky both aren't out at the same time.   If they're high, you've caught a couple of bad breaks.

I`m trying to think up the Canadian equivalent to your MLK comment.

"Pamela Anderson had herpes."   No, wait, if you google herpes, you get a picture of Pam Anderson.
