We took the final game of the series, 9-5, so we won 2 out of 3 from the Res Sox. Corridon went 6,2 innings for the win. He was able to scatter 10 hits and 3 walks so as to only allow 3 runs. Bob Weiland was touched up for 6 runs in 4 innings and took the loss.

We put up a 4 spot in the top of the second, highlighted by Hosmer's 3 run HR, and an RBI double from
Boudreau. The Sox got on back in the third on an RBI hit from Devers. Top 5 we got another 2 runs to open up a 6-1 lead, knocking out Weidland in the process, with Fuhr coming in. RBIs in the inning from a Cullenbine hit and a Hosmer walk with the bags juiced. Leach led off the 7th with a circuit blast to make it 7-1.

Bottom 7 and Corridon was tiring as he approached 100 pitches for the day. They got 2 runs. An RBI triple from one of the Betts triplets, and a SF from Devers. Cionel Perez came in and got Bogarts to foul out and end the inning. Top 8 we got 2 more runs as The Grey Eagle led off with a single, and then scored on Boudreau's second double of the contest. Boudreau then came home on Cullenbine's RBI single. Boudreau now has 34 doubles in 78 games. He is on pace for 70-71 doubles, which would break Earl Webb's record of 67 in a season.

Perez ran into trouble in the bottom of the 8th, allowing 2 runs before Poncedeleon replaced him and got the final 2 outs of the frame. Bottom 9 now, and Poncedeleon gives up just a single to Bogaerts as he closes out the game and notches his first save.

THREE STARS
1. Eric Hosmer - 2 hits, HR, 4 RBI
2. Tris Speaker - 4 for 5, double and 3 singles, 3 runs
3. Lou Boudreau - 3 for 4, 2 doubles, walk, run, 2 RBI

We start a new series overnight tonight. We host the Yard Dogs in a 3 gamer, and then it's the all star break. The Dogs are 36-42, 8 games back in the AL East. They come in on a 2 game winning streak, although prior to that they lost 6 of 8. We lost 2 of 3 at their place, with the one win being that 25-17 game.

We will face 3 righties in the series. First game it's 1968 Juan Marichal (10-8, 4.10). Their catcher is Don Padgett, a D+ thrower. We are back at the top of the rotation with our ace, Roy Mitchell (8-4, 3.11).
1/3/2023 6:48 PM
We took game one of the Yard Dogs series just now, 5-3. Mitchell went 7.1 innings for the win, improving to 9-4, and Fetters went the other 1.2 innings for his 6th save. Marichal took the loss and fell to 10-9.

We took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a SF from Mitchell and an RBI single from Boudreau. After that neither team scored through 6 full innings. I don't see any mention of an injury, but for some reason the Yard Dogs removed Marichal from the game with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th, nobody on, and the pitcher due up. He had only thrown 86 pitches. George Stone came in and go that third out.

Top 7 now, and the Dogs break through for a run on an RBI single from Padgett. Bottom 7, and Speaker and Boudreau start the inning with singles. Strahm replaces Stone on the mound, and is promptly greeted with a 3 run home run off the bat of Roy Cullenbine. Dickey walks, Hosmer flies out, and they change the pitcher again, with Charlie Smith entering the game. He would go the final 1.2 innings without allowing any scoring.

Top 8 now, and with one out there's a triple and an RBI single, so Mitchell is done and Fetters comes in. He allows the inherited run to score, but that's all. So it's now 5-3. Nothing for us in the 8th, so Fetters goes out for the 9th with a 5-3 lead. The Dogs go down quietly, 1-2-3, and that's the ball game.

THREE STARS
1. Roy Cullenbine - 3 run HR
2. Lou Boudreau - 3 hits, run, RBI
3. Roy Mitchell - 7.1 innings for the win, and an RBI.

So we are now on a 3 game winning streak and are 44-35. Same problem though, the 2 best teams in the league are ahead of me in the division. We would be a game out of first in the East, and a game in front in the West, but here in the Central we are 12 games out of first and 6 games out of second, and the Wild Card. Our RD is now up to +43.

Game 2 of the series tomorrow afternoon. We have Geoff Zahn (7-7, 4.21) pitching. He's been our weakest starter lately. Sonny Siebert (3-4, 4.48) goes for the Yard Dogs.

Cullenbine now with 74 RBI in 79 games. Speaker has scored 73 runs.

I just dumped the slumping Murcer for 1955 Harry "Suitcase" Simpson. An A range OFer. Murcer was a D, from a later season (1979). Simpson slashed .300/.358/.413, better than Murcer all around, except about 100 less PA.

Figures we lost this afternoon. Everything has been going wrong all day here. I went to replace an ink cartridge and the replacements I bought 7 months ago were too big, wouldn't fit. Had to go out and buy more. Problems have been piling up all day faster than I can take care of them.

Anyway, the Yard Dogs beat us 5-1. Zahn went 7.2, gave up 5 runs, and fell to 7-8. Sibert only went 4.2 and was removed despite not allowing any runs. Graterol came in, went 2.1 innings, and got the win.

They got 2 in the first on RBIs from Eddie Murray and Tommy Davis. Then nobody scored until the 8th, when they got 3 more runs on RBIs from Cliff Floyd and Mitchell Page, with the third run scoring as Tommy Davis GIDP'd. Our lone run came bottom 9 on a Helms RBI double.

Series finale this evening, we face 2018 Verlander (5-8, 3.92). We go with 2014 Scherzer (1-0, 4.54).
1/4/2023 3:07 PM
Another loss. 7-5 Yard Dogs. Verlander gives up 4 runs in 5 innings and gets the win. Scherzer goes 7, and gives up 4 earned, but 7 total. Two errors in the game for Schofield.

Alcala went 2 scoreless innings after Scherzer was done. Cliff Floyd homered for them. Six of our 11 hits were doubles, including Boudreau's 35th double.

Ne series starts overnight. We are at Klono's Brazen Balls for 3 games. Games are at National's Park which looks almost totally neutral for both batters and hitters. 1972 Steve Kline (6-6, 7.92) goes for them. We have Ray Collins (0-1, 1.13) going.
1/4/2023 7:17 PM
Okay, back on the winning track in the overnights. We beat up on Klono's. 12-5. Ray Collins did not pitch well, but because of the 9 runs we put up by the third inning, he got the win and evened his record at 1-1. Castillo with 3 scoreless innings of relief for the save. Klono's used 7 pitchers. The starter and loser Steve Kline had a particularly ugly stat line:
Player % IP H R ER BB SO HR PC ERA
Steve Kline, L (6-7) 100 2.2 8 9 5 3 0 1 76 4.20

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40613320&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

We posted 5 in the top of the first highlighted by Leach's 3 run HR. Then 4 more in the third for a 9-1 lead, with 3 of the runs coming on a HBP and 2 walks with the bases loaded. Cullenbine took out his anger about the all star snub on Klono's pitching tonight, with 2 doubles and a single, 2 runs and 2 RBI. Leach with 4 RBI. We had 16 hits and drew 5 walks. Bob Meusel with 3 hits for the losers, including his 10th HR.

THREE STARS
1. Tommy Leach - 2 for 4, walk, HR, run, 4 RBI
2. Roy Cullenbine - 2 doubles, single, 2 runs, 2 RBI
3. Tris Speaker - 2 for 4, 2 walks, 3 runs,

Our pattern has been to romp like we just did, but then lose a close game. We need to be more consistent game to game if we're gonna have a chance to catch one of the teams ahead of us to make the playoffs. Meanwhile the second place team in our division, Target Best, is now just 4 games behind the first place team(Balking To New Orleans) and 8 games ahead of us. And we only play the teams in our division 14 times each, just twice more than we play the other teams in our league (12 times each). So trimming our deficit is much harder when we don't play the teams ahead of us all that much head to head.

Game 2 of this series tomorrow afternoon We will face lefty Slim Sallee (8-5, 4.43). We have Roy Mitchell (9-4, 3.14) going.

Just waived Zahn for 1919 George Mogridge.

All that's left from my original roster:

1/5/2023 3:36 PM
Another romp this afternoon, as we beat Klono's 11-5. We jumped on loser Slim Sallee (8-6) for 5 runs in he first and coasted to an 11-5 victory. Roy Mitchell (10-4) allowed just one earned run in 7 innings and lowered his ERA to 3.05.

Top one and we batted around and plated 5 runs.
