Oh man... don't get me started on the early days of Rotisserie Baseball.
This is pre-internet. I ran both A.L. only and N.L only 12-team leagues and I would manually input the stats from the USA Today every week (remember those Tuesday sports editions with all the stats?) I would tabulate the weekly stats on the computer (anybody remember Lotus123?) by substracting current YTD totals minus last weeks' YTD totals. (I was good with spreadsheets very early on). Folks would call Sunday night and leave a message on a dedicated 2nd phone line with their weekly moves.
Same with me, but I got started in 1982. My first pick in this draft was one of my top picks in our first Roto draft: Alan Trammell. In auction format, I think I spent 90% of my funds on Trammell, Jack Morris, Willie Hernandez and Mike Boddicker. The Tuesday USA Today was the gospel. During the week, the daily Washington Post couldn't arrive fast enough. Anyone ever buy a second newspaper in the afternoon to pick up the west coast scores? I could go on and on, but my footnote to this story: 9 of the 12 original owners are still going strong after 40 years! We have made many tweeks to the original 4X4 rules like we've been playing 5X5 for about 20 years. Love it!
