Been thinking a ton about bankroll management lately. I just read "The professor, the banker and the suicide king" and it was obvious that many of todays top pros have gone broke many times and work there way up. I'm 32 and have no aspirations of going pro. My goal is to have fun playing a game I enjoy every aspect of. While not making anymore deposits and hopefully with some skill be able to make the occasional withdrawl to help pay for vacations and such (2-300 a month would satisfy me.

I think I'm close to coming up with a system that has goals to reach to move up levels along with starting at levels that will keep my interest. Micro games bore me and starting at those levels I'm afraid I will lose interest. Now micro mtt I found recently are fun and still challenging.

Not sure how a competition feeds out of this as everyone is at different levels currently. I was thinking something like a micro mtt circuit where we track results against each other or results of x # of sng or 90 man kos.

Any ideas for a challenge along those lines (to start in January)

I'll be interested to see your brm system when/if you'd like to share it. I need some kind of structure, but I think I have many of the same issues you do with maintaining interest, going for dumb attempts at big scores, etc.

Regarding sng or 90 man challenges and or tracking, I'd definitely be up for something like that as well.

Going for the big score is the toughest part for me at the low levels. I need to foucs on picking up .20 to .30 in a short sitting and move on to another place and do the same. WHen I try to shove and race is when I get in trouble.

I'm actually pretty good at staying patient at a cash table. I just can't convince myself to bankroll build through the cash game.

I'm much more novicey at cash than tourneys, but I know a big part of being profitable at cash involves playing low enough that you don't hesitate to make the right move just because you're scared to stack off. But if I play that low, I just don't care, and after 3 orbits I'm desperate to do something more exciting.

The only way I have ever made money in cash games is finding a limit that I can sit down at with at least 50-80 BBs and grind for a few hours while only playing premium hands. BORING. Its more fun if you play 3-4 tables at a time but I still usually end up doing something stupid and wasting whatever gains I have made.

Usually if you are able to stay patient and are playing with consistant table mates during that time you can start to steal and crash into pots later with lesser cards. They build up that respect for you.

Agreed. I find that the .10/.25 game is a solid game for me. Making 15-25 bucks in a session is a satisfying result for me and I still feel comfortable mixing up my play at that level.

Tm first thing I'm doing is setting specific goals
for myself.

Goal 1 is have a $500 balance on all 3 major poker sites (not on ps right now but want to again when i can make a player to player transfer with money from the other 2 sites)

Goal 2 is to be able to pull %50 of monthly profit after I reach the $500 to guarentee a solid foundation.

Goal 3 is to qualify for wsop in 2011. Giving myself a year and a half. As of right now even if I qualify I would probably take the cash and MAYBE play in a lesser event but I wantto play the ME eventually.

No matter how low my br is I still have min levels I will play at. First if I go broke at this level it's just a deposit away. 2nd any lower of a level and it will lose my interest and the fun I have with the strategy of the game.

Min levels

cash 10/25 cent game
SnG 6.50
mtt anything under 3.30 no rebuys

to move up to the next level I will need.

Cash 25 buy-ins at next level
SnG 40 buy-ins
mtt 80 buy-ins

anybody have better ideas, suggestions or concerns over this plan?

I think we are going to need a new thread for poker talk and another for our tournamnets.
