Exhibition 1:

We were still running a slow-down. We have the depth now to go with a normal speed in the next game, so I'm going to do so.

I'm happy with how the team produced here against the Preseason 10th ranked LSU Tigers, who have recovered fully from a very difficult recruiting season a few months ago.

Lyons still isn't doing as well as I expected from him. Perhaps he's just not a scorer, and I have to treat him as such.

I'm going to be experimenting with some different distributions over the course of non-conference play until I find the right combination.

Hey coach, you asked me to give you my thoughts on how everyone looked after the offseason and I think I've seen enough to do that. I only jotted down things that stood out to me...

Jack Avalos:
athleticism: big upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: big upside
perimeter shooting: big upside
speed: big upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: limited upside

Jason basinger:
athleticism: big upside
durability: big upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
shot blocking: big upside
stamina: big upside

brice Diehl:
ball handling: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[looks like athleticism is close to topping out. I knew he'd remain a backup for me - depth bigs with experience are pretty useful, regardless, and he'll be with us for the next 4 years]

Adam Gill:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[the only place to grow is stamina...he's pretty likely to leave for the NBA after this year]

brent Grady:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[room to grow in defense, shot blocking, and stamina]

Millard Hargraves:
speed: limited upside
stamina: big upside
[not much improvement possible in perimeter, which is too bad, but he's still going to be a great pass-first PG]

brian Hill:
ball handling: limited upside
durability: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
[still room to grow in speed, athleticism, and stamina...he's been outperforming his ratings in position skills, and apparently he's still able to improve defensively, so I'm pretty happy with him]

bobby Jaco:
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
[topping off in athleticism within 10-19 points will have him in the 80s there...that's not bad; he's also got room to grow in rebounding, apparently, and some other key ingredients. Good news.]

Jonathan Knipp:
athleticism: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[I guess I will be practicing ball handling and perimeter play with him]

Nolan Lyons:
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
perimeter shooting: big upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[not bad at all]

Harrison Parsons:
athleticism: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[looks like ballhandling, passing, and low post practice are in order]

Wilbur Teed:
defensive fundamentals: big upside
low post moves: big upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: big upside
[his upside doesn't matter because his WE is so low it stifles any progress]

Anyway, maybe some guidelines for practice time? If I notice anything else, I'll let you know.

- Nicholas

Ugly game, but good defense. I'm tweaking our PGs' distribution downward, since they're missing shots.

Based on the exhibition games, I'm going to keep Jaco in the starting lineup and Parsons coming off of the bench.

[edit:]

we've got a tough matchup next against 15th ranked UCLA (coached by oldresorter), at UCLA. They have more experienced guards as starters and backups. We have more depth in the frontcourt. They have a more experienced SF. They are slightly better than us at FT shooting.

Their homecourt advantage is a B+. They are carrying two walk-ons. We are carrying Teed, but otherwise our players are all useful, so we go 11 deep while they go 10 deep.

At this point in the season, I give them the edge. Five games further down the road, I think we might have the advantage.

If we win this, regardless of the rankings, it'll be an upset, though not a huge one. I'd say we have a 40% or so chance of winning.

Ugly game is a very good description of our match-up, CB.

I had figured going into it that I would need a good shooting night in order to pick up a win and I didn't get it. Your team is head and shoulders above me when I comes to most of the categories, but especially in defense.

I look forward to our seasonal match-ups and will one day beat you again, both on the court and in the recruiting field.

Good luck the rest of the season.

I went with an uptempo, because we had the advantage in talent. They went with a slowdown for the same reason. Our guys got more tired than they did but the stats don't show it. I wonder if that means it didn't matter.

They ran a slowdown press, packing the inside. We ran uptempo 0, because they shoot around 1/3 of their total shots from 3. They were competitive for a while but eventually our talent won out.

Avalos has been a really, really great signing.

Parsons has earned his way back into the starting lineup.

Incredibly ugly game, which ended in overtime. I tried to follow lostmyth2's guide on distributions and gave a lot of shots to Parsons. He did not respond well. We lost on the FT line, though - reading through the play-by-play, we missed the front end of two one-and-ones during regulation. I think I may go back to my regular distribution levels...

Parsons had such a horrendous game all around that I put him in as the 6th man again, instead of starting. I can forgive the awful shooting but the 7 turnovers is just not okay.

We didn't suddenly become the Harlem Globetrotters, but we scored 39 points in the second half (to their 20) and got the win. Good game, pokes.

Wyoming will win at least 20 games this year.
