Our defense doesn't work for a game where our offense doesn't work. Also, FTs, but especially rebounds. It had to happen eventually. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Had my heart ripped out earlier today by that buzzer-beater from Michigan State, over my real-life Terps in the NCAA Tournament, after a seemingly magical comeback. I can't remember a time that I have been this bummed out as a sports fan. I wish you the best, Grevis Vasquez, Eric Hayes, and Landon Milbourne. This was my favorite team since 2001-2002. It absolutely kills me that I never get to watch them again.

We fouled too much here, and we lost on the FT line differential, and our turnovers. Basically, this one is on our guards. Anyways, Miami's a good team, and we might still get a 1 seed in the NT.

Oh, joy. My second round opponent (assuming I beat the lowest seeded team in the tournament) is probably going to be my old friend gopokes24, who beat me for the championship two years ago. The 2 seed in my region has knocked me out of the NT before, too. I have sort of a muted ongoing rivalry with the coach of Washington, who followed me at Bloomfield, my DII school, and did not recruit for the long term. UConn always has a lot of talent. This should be interesting.

On a positive note, the ACC gets in 6 teams, including two that were squarely on the bubble.

Round 1 of the NT. As a 1-seed, I am entitled to a near-bye, and receive one by playing a team that is clearly inferior in terms of talent. I run them off the court, as is proper in this circumstance. Now the Tournament begins for real. I have to face my friend gopokes24 next; after that I might be facing a rival, djbrewer0808, if he's able to pull the upset over Georgia Southern as he did over Sacramento State. Following that, the chances are I'll have to face taz21, a friend and rival, who coaches Georgetown under his pseudonym, wrightflyer. That's pretty much a murderer's row of coaches in Crum, and that's just the potential path to the Final Four. So, regardless of my year so far, I have lost 4 games and I am capable of losing another one.

Anything can happen, but if I face the 1 seed that is on the same side of the bracket as me, in the Final Four, that will be Baylor, coached by tannermcc, another friendly rival. He and I came in to the CUSA in Smith at the same time, me at SMU and him at UTEP. I had better recruiting grounds, and was able to create a program faster and graduate up to a floundering Michigan State (which is now doing pretty well). He eventually made UTEP into a force, and has consistently shown that he can create powerful programs in relative backwaters (he has since moved from UTEP to Tennessee, and they are starting to do very well, too). He trains his teams on all three defenses, mostly using halfcourt press/man, but occasionally switching to halfcourt press/zone, and varying his defense greatly, depending on the opponent. The thing is, he's not incredibly successful in the postseason because he's usually doing more with less talent, but it's quite impressive, nonetheless.

Coach, I'm not going to lie, I was probably as guilty as anyone of looking at our path to the Final Four instead of focusing on our first round game. Glad to see that you didn't fall into the same trap. I can almost see it now 'Maryland NATIONAL CHAMPIONS'. Ooops, did it again.

*sigh*...art imitates life. It would've been too much to have some small comfort of my fake team making a run.

Coach, don't be down. I know every coach dreams of winning a National Championship, but with the parity in college basketball, it's no easy task to win 2 games, much less string together 6 wins. Still a great season!

[edit, 3/29/10:]

djbrewer008's Washington squad upset Georgia Southern, then Wyoming, then Texas, and are now in the Final Four.

Baylor lost in the Sweet Sixteen to Syracuse, which in turn lost to LSU, a team I soundly beat in the preseason.

Wisconsin beat Stanford in the second round, then took out Georgetown and Kansas to reach the Final Four (I think this could be argued to be the hardest road of any of the four participants).

Miami of Ohio is the sole 1 seed to make it through their bracket - the highest seed they faced was Virginia Tech.

[edit, 3/31/10:]

LSU beat Wisconsin in the title game.

Gill and Parsons are leaving early. Gill I expected, Parsons I didn't exactly due to his consistently poor statistical performance, but that has no impact on the draft, due to some coaches abusing the old system, where stats would count, by holding back guys' production until their senior year.

#19 C, #73 Overall, ****; ineligible. I really hope that Johnathan Knipp shows up, because if he does I suspect that he will reach the same level of excellence as the #1 C this year (a fellow who I decided not to pursue, in spite of him being 60 miles from me, as I did not like his FT shooting and felt him overrated due to a now-mostly-irrelevant rating, WE). With high potential in stamina and athleticism, Knipp could be a great backup C who will mature to the starting role as a 5th year senior. He could even fill in the PF slot, if necessary. A possible professional. I put extra money into him to try to persuade him to show up in spite of the year off.
I wish I had kept track of that #1 C so I could have compared them. Knipp was a valuable reserve. He never cracked the starting lineup but played starter minutes in his Junior year, backing up both positions. He will probably not be drafted. Perhaps he would've been if we had progressed further in the NT. Nonetheless, his departure will leave a void in our defense.
