I really dont think HBD requires staff 24/7. I'm sure everyone has Christmas and New Years off anyway and I wouldn't be suprised if it was every Sunday, to boot.

I'm not even sure I used "celebrate" in any of my posts. They're holidays. Days where things are closed. As in not open. Do you scream at the McDonald's cashier on Dec 26th because they weren't open when you wanted a tastyfreeze on the 25th?

What about your local watering hole? Mine is not open til 4 PM tomorrow. Should I go in and cuss them out at 4 because I wanted to get my drunk on at noon like every Thursday?
11/24/2009 12:32 PM
I'd imagine they staff the office much like a radio station, actually. Never empty, but often quite sparse.

Everyone wants a break without falling behind.

If there's a way to do it that isn't biased toward one nationality/ethnicity/tradition/religious belief, I'd consider it.

But American holidays are not fair to ALL users and as you've pointed out, it takes only one paying customer to cry "discrimination" for this to be a non-starter with WifS.

Oh, did I make the paper in Idaho?

I'm sure I don't care what you'd consider.

But I'll ask you this: I assume you have a job. I assume you're closed on certain days. Some of these days may be American or religion based. Do you demand to work on these days? If not, why?

WTF are you, a Communist?

"I'm quite sure that people at your local grocery store don't get OT to work Saturdays."

Salary'd employees don't get OT anyway. Weekends are generally a time when service requests go unanswered and everyone deals with it just fine.

I'm pretty sure they already don't show up on holidays unless a server crashes.

You'll need a much better excuse than "employees aren't around to support the game".

And some people benefit from holidays where they can spend extra time on the computer. Not everyone sits on the computer during their work day playing the game.

and you're the one. Why aren't American holidays fair?

I'm sure WiS keeps data that show which days of the year site usage drops to its lowest levels. They're probably Christmas, Thanksgiving and one of Memorial Day, Independence or Labor days (baseball's an American game, after all).

Adding placeholder days on the three-to-five lowest wouldn't be a bad idea at all.
11/24/2009 12:41 PM
And, as I said in post 1, you'd still be able to make roster moves. Just no games would be played. RTFM.

Do you even know anyone who works in IT? They work weekends all the time. How's that? They don't have "regular" Mon-Fri, 9-5 shifts. They get their 40 hours/week, just not the traditional way. Just like people in the grocery store.

But that aside, all I said was that they'd be better served trying to use an internal employee-based angle, rather than a user-based reason if they wanted to have Placeholder days during the season because not all users are subject to the same holidays as people living in Cincinnati, Ohio.

It was a thought to reduce the outcry from non-American users... not a serious recommendation. Geez.... who ****** in your Cheerios?

******-on Cheerios. Lovely image. Well at least it finally got those ugly feet from yesterday out of my mind.

This is the most valid point yet. HBD/SLB are games based on AMERICAN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. Use American holidays.

When they come up with a Sim-game based on say, curling, then we'll use Canadian holidays... or Sim-Bocce can use Italian holidays... or Sim-Dogsledding can use Inuit holidays.

I'm one of those Americans with a job that has no holidays (law enforcement). Floating holidays, scheduled 6 months in advance. And you'll never hear me whining about it - I chose this career and the responsibilities that come with it. Most people do get those days off - heck, I can request them off, for the sake of my family, but they are NOT a god-given right. Some jobs are 24/7/365 and believe me, you're happier because some of us choose to do them.

Right now, HBD has a fair system in place - there is no preferential treatment given to anyone. You play HBD, you live with the schedule. I'm sure MOST people want an occaissional break. I'm sure MOST of the paying customers would be OK with HBD being "closed" five days a year. I'd prefer, when I do have to work on Christmas, to have my HBD teams playing so I can make those hours pass faster. If WifS were to implement your suggestion, I'd live with it.

But it's a dumb idea. Currently, it works. And while it might be inconvenient for the vast majority to have HBD games simmed on Christmas, for a small sub-set, it might be the only "joy" they get on that day.

For the record, I'll be working Christmas Day, 2009. My family and I will be celebrating December 6th, because that's the only day it works for the whole extended family. And I'm sure I'll check my HBD teams several times, both days, because this is an activity that helps me pass the time at work, and at home, in my pursuit of happiness.
