Greatest DII Player of All-Time? Topic

Just to make it perfectly clear...

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT RATINGS. I've been playing DII in Wooden for 27 seasons. I'm aware there are higher rated players than Smith. I am only talking about Daniel Smith's success at the DII level...I seriously doubt anyone's ever had a player win NPOY three years in a row. That's what I mean by being the best ever. If your player was drafted, that would count as more success, I suppose.

But I do appreciate seeing some pretty incredible DII ratings (like oldwarrior's team above).

Also, regarding distribution, I understand that can skew the numbers, but should it? It's not as if Daniel Smith shot poorly...he averaged 45% FG% over his career. It's not great, but it's not bad, either. Plus, distro has nothing to do with his rebounding, shot blocking and steals.

i am not trying to give you a hard time. congrats on three straight NPOY awards with 1 player, that is very rare i am sure.

in real life, some people talk about lebron james vs jordan. IMO, its not even close at this point. because in the end of the day, winning isn't everything, its the only thing. if lbj wins 6 national player of the year awards it will do 0 to change my opinion that jordan is in a completely different stratosphere. sure, king james has the goods. but you have to bring home the trophy for it to be worth a **** in the discussions akin to the greater player of all time discussion.

Good call, coach_billy...i agree.

I wonder who has been the star of the most successful teams...

And, for the record, Daniel Smith wasn't my player. He played for my main rivals: Western Oregon.

I don't get how he was player of the year once, much less three times.

He seems like a decent enough player -- one that I'd love to have for myself -- and while I know they don't grow on trees, a 15 and 10 player isn't that rare.

I suppose it is the blocks and steals that led him to be NPOY which is a bit odd. Despite what agentverde posted, I'd say a big man that shoots 45% is indeed shooting poorly. While everything else is nice, I'd never want my big man shooting 43.7% from the field like he did his junior year. And even if it did, it would seem to rule him out for awards.

Not to knock the guy, but he's a pretty average redshirt C for a high D2 school. He got his boost from high distro and minutes in a weak league, a sure way to game the selection process. I know I've got at least one former D2 POY that beats him in everything but steals despite playing 500 fewer minutes and taking 400 fewer shots (almost a seasons worth for Smith).

Again, no knock on the guy, he's won you some games I'm certain, but concidering he doesn't rank in the top 20 in any catagory historicly for D2 tends to knock him out of all time concideration in my book (not that that is the only criteria and most of the leaders there, at least in points, were gamed to get there as well).

Who cares what his overall is?

Porath: 69ath/64spd/96reb/92def/96blk/66lp/47pas

Van Zant: 89ath/42spd/99reb/60def/99blk/87lp/25pas

I'm sorry, but I would take Van Zant over Porath every time if I need a post player.

And I seriously doubt you have two players in one class better than Van Zant. Especially since I just looked and you have no one even close to him (maybe they will be, maybe not, but you have no one right now).

EDIT: And my original post wasn't even talking about Porath, it was about the OP's guy.

isack - agree completely about Van Zant being a better post player, likely a better rebounder, too with his athleticism advantage.

But I play a motion and man to man and Porath is an elite D2 defender and passing big man, so he was perfect for me.

I would have loved to have paired up the two of them, though.

No doubt, mcauley.

I wasn't comparing the two in my original post, I was comparing my guys to the greatest of all time.

Porath is a stud. I think it's unlikely to find a lot of guys who are better all-around players. It's too bad those guys don't always flourish in WIS like they do in RL because of the seeming rigidity.

I actually play motion/man, too, and have had a ton of success with Van Zant. He'll likely end up winning 90 games or so in his 3 years as a starter (granted he's been on some pretty good teams). Although he plays C, too, so that's a difference.

It's always interesting to me to see what types of players coaches who have the same sets as me recruit. It seems we've both had a lot of success doing it differently, which is interesting. I rarely look for def/passing in post players and focus much more heavily on ath/reb.
