I'll make the argument because it can be made.

A commish does most of the heavy lifting to fill a world. The commish gets all the crap when one member falls "out of line." The commish gets a whole $5 for this while paying the same as everyone else to play the game.

Why shouldn't he want to build the best team he can within the rules of the world?

That's what I feel as well.. I didn't become a commish to help everyone else win while I just sit there with a **** team.. Follow the rules you enforce ..

One thing I want to add to this.. The hardest part about being a commish is even after you screen owners you still end up with that one dipshit that don't want to follow the rules of the world and when you go to replace them Admin don't do anything about it.. Makes it not even worth being a commish if you can't even run your own world.

sry bout that, tom. next time i will not join one of your leagues

lol, well since you haven't joined any of my leagues then we're good.. Actually I may have a team open for you next season.... So if you're interested..
2/12/2010 11:31 AM
i'm always interested. it's just a matter of time & $. right now i have no $.
2/12/2010 11:32 AM
i don't believe you

Apparently the commish in question is offended by this thread despite the fact I didn't call him out. Now, however, I will.

The commish of Hometown (gman981981) tanked for the first few seasons of the league. He made no effort to win games and accumulated a ton of high draft picks and IFAs. Once he started trying to win, he's been trading the marginal players to mostly new and unsuspecting owners for their best prospects, which keeps the cycle going. He feels he owes nothing to the league and his practices have been fine. What do you think?
2/12/2010 3:04 PM
What are the rules of Hometown when recruiting new owners?

Are they being enforced?

If so, the commish is doing nothing wrong.

That's different from "do I think anyone should anyone join that world?"

Really, someone could create a world and say "tank your team to hell, we encourage it! But, no contracts over $6m a year"

Anyone looking into the league would then wonder what the hell was going on when there are 5 teams at 12-150, but as long as there are no contracts over $6M, the commissioner is doing his/her job.

Buyer beware!

failure gets you 7 gc's hbd league!
2/12/2010 3:17 PM
hell's yea, is anyone doing that since I ?

Just rolled into Season 11. Good league, been drama free for a couple seasons, historically good turnover rates and parity has been improving steadily the last few seasons (1 outlier with 1113 losses but the next worse was 100). We may have a couple more teams but these are the available ones right now.

Texas Gunslingers - AL South 62-100

Pretty dissappointing year here. Team is better than that. Get a top pick to start the rebuilding process next year.

St.Louis River Pirates - NL North 73-89

Team is still rebuilding but has added some key pieces out of the draft the last couple seasons.

Vancouver Primetimers - AL West 71-91

Owner may yet return, but for now this team remains ownerless. Its a team in transition, but has some valuable pieces, including a 2-time MVP.

Fargo Beet Diggers - NL North 85-77

Oustanding young team will only be better this season. Owner had too many teams at the same time, but this one is stacked with good young talent.

No rules. No guidelines. Nothing to enforce. You gets what you deserve.

i have no idea. i haven't played the hockey sim in years.
2/12/2010 3:21 PM
I guess...my standards have changed since I saw the light.
2/12/2010 3:22 PM
Your standards are not in question, mostly.

The league you choose should match the standards you'd like to see in a league. If the league ad says "really good guys, lots of fun", then what are the standards?

And what standards can you complain about that are not enforced after the fact?

Does the commish make a point to ask everyone to consider the trade, take a second look...in case it was glossed over in the veto process? Or, is that considered campaigning against the trade?

Perhaps, if one owner has a problem with a particular trade, and NONE of the 31 other owners (or 29 other owners not involved in the trade) even casually mentions that trade in an otherwise very active league chat... maybe that one dissenting owner needs to come to grips with the fact that it was not as lopsided as he thought.

The problem here is that HBD has no infrastructure for "other rules" besides base HBD rules. Worlds are not rule-customizable (IE, teams need to have ML cities associated, draft picks need to be signed, etc).

A world can set its arbitrary rules, but there is no way to enforce them.

In a private world, a commish can ask WIS to remove them at the end of the year. Or you can simply take it into your own hands and drive the whiners, and troublemakers and rulebreakers away. The latter method is certainly more fun and satisfying.
