"The Umpire Strikes Back" by Luciano was a stitch. He tells a funny story about umpiring a spring training game and chiding a 3b over an error. The 3b challenged him to swap roles - and he did! I won't tell you the end. Luciano was a very funny man. If you ever saw him ump a game you'd know what I mean. No one could punch a base runner out better than him. Think I'll go and see if I can find any YouTube videos of him.

speaking of umpires, check out As They See 'Em: A Fan's Travels in the Land of Umpires, by Bruce Weber. He is a reporter for the NY Times who went to a 5 week umpire school and then worked. He interviewed umps at all levels. It's very interesting.

I really enjoyed parts of Bill James' Historical Baseball Abstract. The article on Ernie Lombardie, in particular. Ted Williams' My Turn at Bat is a light, but decent read.

My favorite (and yes, I'm biased because I am a Rangers fan) is Seasons in Hell: With Billy Martin, Whitey Herzog and "The Worst Baseball Team in History"-The 1973-1975 Texas Rangers by Mike Shropshire.

Read this and laugh...both at the book and me for being such a diehard fan.

I'm glad noone has mentioned "Three Nights In August" - I never cared for Tony LaRussa and the book is just as boring as he is.

JMHO...
