maybe it ought to be separate lists of the best DI coaches, best DII coaches, and best DIII coaches. There could be overlap. Alblack is certainly among the best DII coaches in the game.

Here's a question: Who's won the most titles with different teams? (And I freely admit it's a bit self-serving, as I have five titles, all w. different teams.)

4 teams here.

No offense to any other coach who was wasn't chosen. I probably forgot an obvious one or two, and limiting it to twelve was very difficult, but to me, these are the top of the line guys.

To answer question two, yes, I think certain coaches in this group would be more successful than others, but not in a dominating fashion.

Thanks emy I appreciate being mentioned here. I agree that you sell yourself short a bit here too (whoever else had mentioned that), your Post teams were always tough in Rupp.

Completely honored to be mentioned as well, but for some reason have this tremendous knack for making excellent / consistent National Title contenders that like to stop playing in the NT. :-)

I'd probably finish top 2 my half of that conference every year, but would never win it. Those coaches can close the deal on the NT consistently. Heck emy, I'd put you in there over me. (Among quite a few others) I'm not even sure I'd be in my own Top 25 if this was only about building a National Title team. If you were looking for a powerful dynasty, then maybe I'd consider myself.

Yeah I would have to think hard about my top 12 as well mlat, I know that guys like lm2, OR, Al, ole D and Gil would be there for sure tho.

7 titles/5 teams here.

Thanks for the kudos, emy. But not sure I would make a top 12. I have 4 DI titles and a 2 championship game losses(1 to you). OR, LM, and gillespie are in a different universe. I have no idea how OR managed to win some of his titles in Tark with UConn teams that were not clearly better than the competition. He gets my vote as being the best.

I think after the initial group, there are a couple dozen coaches you could make a compelling argument for. There are guys with only 1-2 teams that don't post alot that are extremely tough. They won't have the same body of work or total titles as guys who've played a lot of worlds, but they're really tough.

That's another interesting one ... who really maximizes the talent they have.

Surely life-long .500 coaches (um, me) deserve some mention. I figure I must have contributed a couple of hundred wins to the all-time greatest coaches.

Heh, me also jennings.

this got me to thinking what are some hard numbers one can look at to seperate a great from good coach. NT championships are certainly a measure but a limited one. I certainly think that consistently making the NT and performing well in it tends to make the cream rise to the top. By sorting the All-time or Active leaders in tourney bids can give you a good listing of coaches, then look at winning percentage in the tourney (an overlooked stat) and you have a pretty premium list at above .666 winning percentage in the tourney (approximate average of a Sweet 16). This gives you a lot of names to consider at all levels.

I also think that DI is the most difficult level to coach and be consistently successful. My only championship came in DII in a recent stint there and I believe if you can build to a A/A+ prestige in DII and have any idea how to recruit you can pretty much put it into cruise control for the program. Just my opinion.

one name i haven't seen listed under this analysis of DI tourney bids and WP in NT is kjufbq who recently retired from Naismith. He was a good one in his prime.

I'd want to see the season/title ratio if we went just on that. Many coaches have 3+ titles, but do it in 150+ seasons. Other coaches have 2-3 titles, but in under 50 seasons. One this account it only has 24 seasons and has 2 titles with 2 other title games. Another of mine has something like 6 seasons with 1 title. Another has 11 seasons with 2 title games but 0 titles. Winning titles is being the best, but anyone who has stuck it out for 100+ seasons *SHOULD* have at least 4 titles. I know if I am around by season 100 on this account I'll likely get a good 8+ more.

*disclaimer* I am not trying to put myself in the top. I know where I stand. I am just saying I have not seen any of the newer guys other then gil who have had success, but don't have 10+ teams like the other coaches listed to build up seasons played.

Newer guys would be someone like brianp who has like 3 titles in probably 40ish seasons, but his first 10+ he was still learning. Halfastros would be another. Idk how new clone is, but not many have really mentioned him either.
