new engine - opinions welcome Topic

The #1 goal of this game should be to have an engine that delivers realistic college basketball box scores, and have those box score reflect the roster quality and the strategy quality of the coach vs one's opponent. Seems like the new engine delivers reasonably well vs those requirements.

Some of the other parts of the new engine, injuries, low post effecting guard driving ability, highly differentiated player ratings, stunted player growth (both more low pot players and slower growth), etc - I am not so sold on - but I will adjust

I am playing positionally (SF/sg/pg/pf/c) almost identically to before - if anything - the things I like to do have been aided by the types of differentiated players available .... I don't think you will see as many d1 teams with all 99 core skills players at SG/PG/PF/C any longer, almost all teams will have to compromise some.

The flaw in what I just wrote, it is possible a few teams might be able to have all 99'd skilled players, and those teams may be near unbeatable - for a variety of reasons, top schools in top markets, especially if somewhat isolated from other top schools, may be able to assemble some near ridiculous competitively advantageous teams - that comment may or may not be true, if some teams outscores everyone else by 50 ppg for the season and goes 35-0 then we will know

As I said earlier, everyone needs to give the new engine a chance - the engine itself seems to be working reasonably well considering the magnitude of the rewrite, and to a certain extent, ignore and get past the quirky changes and give the rewrite about a 3 month grace period, as the entire process debugs itself. Hang on - my guess is it is goig to be quite a ride.

someone (a retired coach) sent me a sitemail asking what I thought of the new engine, thought my reply might interest others?

i don't know what I think - I think the cards are all getting thrown up in the air, and will land re-arranged -

but will it good or bad, great or terrible, I don't know?

Often, when the game has changed significantly, those who don't get hung up on the bad, and focus on the good can get a pretty big advantage for a while, might be the case this time???

hope you give it a try -good luck either way

That is a fair response, OR. I agree that the new engine shouls be given a 2-3 season grace period to allow for the tweaking that needs to/will occur. I also agree that some remote teams (Colorado, etc) may be able to put together some monster rosters. That is not a new problem but could be augmented based on the quality of the new recruits.

I just hope people remember that even if we had beta texsted it for three years, there would still be some bugs on release.

are you and a in the b the same coach?

Either way, what are your technical opinions on the new engine? Same offense results? same defense? same players? same gameplan? same recrutiing? If different how? You like it all better? All the same?

I sometimes suspect that a_in_the_b and arssanguinus are two of seble's multiple personalities.

IQ's will improve at, or near, the same rate.

In the test world they really appeared be high because the same season was run twice and the IQs weren't reset, resulting in double IQ gains over the season. You won't see players go from D to A- in a single season.

a few things...

1) yeah, the beta wasn't really a beta. and it did turn me off too, the timing of the whole thing. but, i think we need to recognize how much better this release will be than the original potential release, because seble took the time to get our input. was it the cleanest manner possible? no way, but that is not really the point. he took a lot of input from a lot of users, and we are absolutely all going to benefit from it.

2) i think OR is dead on, in his sitemail to the other coach. the people who really focus for this release, work hard and think hard to get ahead... they can get really far ahead. the quality of the pool of coaches is going to drop significantly, just like it did with potential. its like, everybody goes down a notch, vets lose their long built advantages, and its really up in the air who is going to end up at the top. it should be a very exciting time for a lot of coaches, even if you don't like all the changes, the opportunity to get ahead is great but also short, so get it while the getting is good.

3) i do agree with OR and grecian there might be some monster teams. but, don't just look for a monster team out of colorado (ahh, that bring back fond memories. well, just one really). i think with the changes to recruit generation, having access to a larger pool of recruits is going to be a bigger advantage than it used to be. especially early on, when people don't know the value of the "odd" (by today's standards) recruits.

4) i am really really happy to see there are some high reb guards again. but it will definitely contribute to #3. i feel like the best 5 players ive ever had were all high reb guards, and maybe one d1 sf.

"Dustin Baker hits the front of the rim on the jumpshot from the free throw line". When I am scanning and read "Dustin Baker hits", I am expecting a basket."

yes, when you're rushed, it does get rather confusing...

plus add to that the incessant 'Clanked' ,' Clanged' or any other onomatopoetic descriptive for an errant shot along w/'missed the shot badly'(?). If a game had that level of Bricks, (NB: not just a missed shot) you could build a new Great Wall. Frankly all three get silly and sometimes frustrating.

Underwhelmed is an excellent term from the Old One for what I thought would be a collaborative chance to really improve many facets of the game but as a few other have referenced all the contributions seemed one way.
Game constructs were handed out for usage, retrieved, painted a new color and handed down again w/very little behind the scenes logic/intent..imo

I didn't see much difference overall at DII, so I think the flashing main page buildup (All New! Coming Soon to a PC Near You!!) is a little over the Top, imo...
lotta horn not too much drive train.

i think seble changed about the right amount. i have heard a similar number of "he changed too much" and "he changed too little" complaints. so i think that is pretty good.
