WOW!

How is "I'd like to make my Type A a Type B so he has a better chance of getting signed" fundamentally different than "I'd like to make my Type B a Type A so he has a lesser chance of getting signed"?    Essentially both owners would be manipulating the system for their own good.

It is always funny to read another post from Mike where he pulls an idea of out the air the has almost nothing to do with the point of the post and then uses that as a counter argument to the original point or suggestion.

It's a gift, Mike.  I'll never know if you're that creative or that dim but it's fun to read either way.

I'm not going to debate this with you.  I've seen how that's gone for too many others.

Thanks for your feedback on my suggestion.

So, in essence, you can't tell me how it's fundamentally different.    You know why?   Because it isn't.

Just a question:  Do you guys see people waiting for the draft prospects to be generated before signing type A free agents (what I see as an end-run around the comp rules) as as being perfectly OK?

If they're valuable, they get signed.   If they're not, they don't.  If they have some use, they get signed when the designation drops.  The owner has lost over 1/3 of the season of usage and the player has taken some ratings hits.

Here's what I do:   I see my Type A.  I say "Damn, he probably won't get signed."   I think "I can probably get him back on the cheap.  I'll plan on that."   If he gets signed before I think his salary demands equal his value, I get comped.   If he doesn't, I get my player back at quite a discount.  Win/win.

I do that too.

Doesn't that seem like a better way to handle the potential non-signing of Type A FA?

Probably.  It could be that you have a stud coming up from the minors or something, but you can still trade your guy after resigning him, or, have him ride the pine, and do it all over again next season (at which point he might be a type B anyway).  Ok, fine.   I rescind my support of the OP's suggestion.

I don't see it as "perfectly" OK, but it's the loophole in the system created by the fact that the player's former team doesn't even have to pretend they want the player back to be eligible for compensation.  And it's not like it's penalty free, relative to signing the guy before the season.  If that's happening with real impact talent in a world, then you probably need to find a world with more owners that are actually trying to win now.  As was pointed out, the teams with the Top 16 picks, along with anyone who has already signed a Type A, don't have to give up a first rounder.

Again, compensation isn't supposed to be something you get for a player you don't want to keep.  And while you might have some legitimate situations where you wind up being unable to sign your own Type A back even after demands go all the way down, the very act of switching a guy from Type A to Type B would be a declaration that you have no desire/plan to re-sign.

OK, sweet.  On page 4, we have exactly ZERO support for this idea.

I declare this thread CLOSED!!!!

Come on tuffffft, don't give up so easily.

Write a 7 page dissertation on why it actually is a good idea, that will sway everyone's opinions for sure.

I'm on the fence for sure!

AlCheez wins the thread.

This whole discussion is an historic waste of time.

If they are gonig to make a change to the Type A/B FA thing, it need to be one that makes it more in-line with MLB rules.

It doesn't have to be all wordy, just a simple "if you could, would you like to keep this player?" ...and sometimes they agree to stay, if not, you get your comp. picks.

This business about being able to change your player from a Type A to a Type B is absurd.
