2010-11 Player release Topic

All players should now be available.

This year's players do not have any factoring for all-defense, so once those are announced that set of players may increase in defensive rating (including Howard).

The major significance in the new defensive ratings is the removal of defensive rebounding from consideration.  It's now based only on Steal%, Block%, Fouls, and Team Defensive FG%.  The All-Defense awards basically just provide a rating "floor", so for example a player named to the 1st  team can't have a rating below 90 for that season.   As always, no system for defense is going to be perfect due to the lack of stats, but hopefully these numbers better match your expectations.

Thanks for your patience and let me know if you see any issues.

thanks a lot!!

But decrease the value of blocks...  Manute has 100 Def / Rodman not once??
Dr J has got 9 Seasons with a 100 DEF???
MJ has only 1 season with 100 DEF??
Kirilenko has 5 with 100 DEF
10/11 Jeremy Lin has 100 DEF??
Bill Russell has only one season with 90 Def, all others are around 70 ??
Tim Duncan 3 seasons with 100 DEF
The Dream and the Admiral each have 3 seasons with 100DEF
Mark Eaton has 5 seasons with 100 DEF

I think it shows that Blocks value is too high, since DR J etc. got a defensive boost while Rodmans and others DEF decreased because of the low Block numbers...

Nevertheless a good try.

Would it be possible to get some detail on the new defensive rating logic?  I notice that you're using the magic number 100 again...Jeremy Lin is at 100, and Manute Bol has several seasons at that level.  Bill Russell, on the other hand, has one season at 90 and the rest are in the 70s.  At face value, this seems nonsensical.

Yeah it seems that Dwight Howard has a similiar sitution, not a severe but similiar

Lin is a case of high numbers in a small sample size.  He had a ridiculous Steal% and had the highest Block% for PGs.  Try not to get too caught up in the small sample guys.  Lin is barely even draft eligible and won't be of much use in a SimLeague.

For Russell, only one season during his career did the NBA pick All-defensive team (the one where he's a 90), so his ratings for previous seasons don't benefit from the award as they probably would if it had existed at that time.

I believe only DPOY has been announced so far, but if I'm wrong please pass along the link.  Usually All-Defense teams are in May.

Bol had the very high block numbers, but he also didn't foul very much in relation to those high blocks.

But that means that Low post players benefit to much from blocking, while guards seldom average 2 let alone more than 3 Steals..  This also doesn't mean that a high blocking guy has to be a good defender. JaVale McGee is average at best but due to his blocks he has got a 72 DEF rating.

Can you manually fix for someone like Russell?  Believe he does deserve 90's defense....

Like I said, the system will never be perfect due to lack of stats.  We do the best we can given what's available.

I totally understand this. My argument is: A low post player can block every shot that is being shot in the post. But the guard (Especially before Zone was allowed) could and still can steal only his man's ball in 80-90% of possesions. So 2 steals should be counted like 3 or 4 Blocks at least..

Thanks for the effort to at least make changes once in awhile.  I'm not sure there can ever be a perfect formula, but at least updates keep things interesting.  Wish WIS NFL would do a little more of that.

1. Spreadsheet?

2. Guards are not in position to block as many shots.

3. How do fouls go into it?  Could be argued that a guy trying not to foul is not being a great defender.

4. Russell- why not make up your own all-defensive team for these years using stats mentioned above?  It is really not cool to penalize these years.

Thanks
