Keeping a player in the minors for 5 full seasons is kind of a waste.
Draft a player at 18.
He goes on the 40 at 21.
If you hold him back 20 games at age 21, you control him til he's 32. 21,20 games. 22-24, minimum. 25-26, arb. 27-31, 5 year contract. At 32, he might be a type A that someone will sign but he will defintely be declining before whatever contract he gets, if he gets something in the range of his demands, is complete..
Okay Mike T, I am still learning the game and appreciate the opportunity to learn something.
I do not understand your statement: "If you hold him back 20 games at 21 ..."
Do you mean "hold him back " in the minors, or promote him to the ML for 20 games?
This is how I am interpreting your post. Please correct me where I am wrong.
So you handle a stud prospect thusly:
18- Rookie
19-Low A
20-High A
21-20 games in AA or AAA and then promote to majors.
So the 20 games in the minors means that you then have two more FULL seasons at the minimum before his arb years kick in.
If this is the case, my stud players in this particular world have been in AA now for 60 games. Should I go ahead and bring them to the bigs and put them on the 40? Will I still get the full benefit of what you outlined?
Of course, my thinking is: when rebuilding, I load a team up with prospects and put some "ringers" on the roster so the prospects get maximum development time by playing all the playoff series'. I personally would not be very concerned about "controlling the player til he's 32."
But if I'm interpreting you right, your outline has merit.
Please let me know if 1) I am reading your post correctly and 2) Where do I go from here with these 4th year stud prospects. If it was you, would you immediately promote them?
