Ryan Dunleavy writes: What can Rutgers pay for a new coach?

Rutgers hasn't made the NCAA since 1991. The market price for a Big Ten men’s basketball coach begins at $1.6 million per year. Eddie Jordan was making $1.15 million, with a raise to $1.45 million scheduled to take effect in April.

Here are some other financials to keep in mind as Rutgers search nears a negotiations phase:

$3.3 million: Amount Rutgers has paid to part ways with its men’s three basketball head coaches since 2010 – Fred Hill, Mike Rice and Eddie Jordan. Rutgers has spent at least another $4.3 million on severances with other head coaches and top athletics officials during that same span.

$2.7 million: Average compensation of the seven Big Ten basketball coaches who led their teams to the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The ceiling was Michigan State’s Tom Izzo ($3.4 million) and the basement was Iowa’s Fran McCaffery ($1.8 million), according to USA Today.

Greg Gary, assistant coach at Purdue – The Tulane alumnus has made eight different stops, including Centenary as head coach.

Scott Cherry, head coach at High Point – He’s won at least a share of the Big South championship the past four seasons, including two NIT berths.

I am hoping Rutgers will call and hire:

Kevin Boyle, the former coach at St. Patrick's High in Elizabeth who has built Monteverde Academy intothe premier high school program.

He is not an ordinary high school coach, not by any definition. If LSU star freshman Ben Simmons is drafted in the top three this spring (and he will be) then Boyle will have coached five top-three picks in the last six years. Kentucky and Kansas can't even match that.

Kyrie Irving. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. DeAngelo Russell. Joel Embiid. I'm not saying all or any of them would have gone to Rutgers had Boyle been the head coach, but his name is certainly as or more familiar to top high school players than the remaining candidates for this job.
