Frank Viola 1988
This pick simultaneously forces both NebHusker and myself to need a default SP2. I had already planned on this contingency when I drafted Mike Fetters over Jonathan Sanchez last round. Once again, I mistakenly assumed Chisock would select the much better SP available (locking me in to Sanchez). Instead, he grabbed a guy with a significantly worse ERC# and higher HR/9#.

But that's fine... now I can focus on other needs w/o being tempted to draft Viola. He was never playing anyway, and with the $3M penalty, the default SP2 is only $1M more in salary than Viola.

I assume NebHusker is of the same mindset as he passed on Viola last round, when it was clear Viola was his only SP2 option.

If I'm going to draft a guy who hopefully is never going to pitch then why not save $2.5 million in a draft where that matters? If Sanchez ends up pitching we'll be down by so many that he can give up as many homers as he wants.

I have to choose between defaulting at SP2 or RP1. I can only take Rangers in either category and therefore will be stuck in one.

Good point Chisock. I didn't look at your other starting pitchers and didn't realize that you had grabbed enough innings from just your top four (not everybody has that luxery). There's no way to know that you probably could have waited, as I wasn't planning on taking my fifth SP until the very end anyway. Heck, I assumed mpitt76 was going to wait until round 24 to take Dave Stewart (he was the only person who could draft him), but he instead took Viola 5 rounds earlier.

Even in these later rounds, I just can't justify killing my draft position, drafting a higher-priced player I'm never using. Had Viola still been there at my pick, and knowing NebHusker was behind me and could only draft Viola as his SP2, I am 90% sure I was still passing on him for at least another 1-2 rounds.

Of course, there is value moving up in the expansion draft, so it's a tradeoff.
