PACKERS: Datone Jones is latest DL bust drafted Topic

As expected, Giacomini was cut, as was Evan Dietrich-Smith. Free agent OL Nick McDonald has made the team. Meanwhile, last year's failed RT, Allen Barbre, was put on IR along with S Will Blackmon. The team will probably negotiate injury settlements with both.

Other notable cuts are QB Graham Harrell (who has indicated he would choose the Packers' practice squad over any other practice squad opportunity), P Chris Bryan, giving Tim Masthay the punting job, RB Kregg Lumpkin (making FB John Kuhn the third-string halfback), TE/LB Spencer Havner, who missed the offseason workouts after crashing his bike this spring and giving Tom Crabtree a spot on the roster as the fourth TE, WR Jason Chery, whose 75-yard punt return against Indy excited some but who then fumbled his first shot against KC, and NT Anthony Toribio (gives Justin Harrell a spot on the roster, Toribio may be a practice squad guy).

Packers had indicated they would try to find takers for Dietrich-Smith and Barbre in a trade, but got no bites.

Packers could have traded one of the O-linemen to Philly but didn't want to face him in Week 1, so cut him.

Five of the Packer cuts were claimed on waivers, including Kregg Lumpkin (Tampa), Havner (Detroit) and Toribio (KC).

Packers win opener at Philly, their first win there since 1962. Yikes. Michael Vick nearly rallied the Eagles but Clay Matthews was awesome and the defense held just enough.

Former first-round bust Justin Harrell tore his ACL, putting him on IR for the season. Jarius Wynn was re-signed and will take Harrell's place on the D-Line. Cullen Jenkins broke his hand and will wear a club for a few weeks. Ryan Grant hurt his ankle and seems likely to miss a few weeks as well.

ARodg played awful, the Clifton/Tauscher veteran tackle duo allowed three sacks (all against Phily's base defense) and things were just out of sorts most of the game. Still, not many road teams won opening weekend so we'll take a W any time.

Reports are that Ryan Grant is out for the season; the decision to keep only two halfbacks looks ESPECIALLY brilliant now.

Packers sign RB Dmitri Nance off Atlanta's practice roster to take Grant's spot on the roster. Undrafted rookie out of Arizona State, ran for 795 yards last season, leading the team in rushing for the second straight year. Early scouting report on  Nance: not super-fast, not super-elusive, but fits zone blocking scheme as one-cut runner.

Arian Foster was undrafted and he seems pretty good.  As much as i don't like the Pack, that sucks to lose two key guys.

It figures that Thompson would try to find the youngest available RB instead of trading for a guy with some experience.

Could be worse...Jerry Angelo could be your GM.

LB AJ Hawk, who did not play a snap from scrimmage in the opener as the Packers stayed in their nickel package for the entire game (Chillar replaces Hawk in the nickel package, mostly cause Hawk couldn't cover ME, much less a professional football player), is open to being traded, according to his agent. Hawk's contract calls for a $10M salary in 2011, which obviously will not be paid.

Clay Mathews with another dominant performance and the Packers rolled over the Bills, 34-7. LT Chad Clifton, apparently still struggling with his knee, was replaced by 1st round draft choice Bryan Bulaga during the game... unclear if Bulaga will get some starts in the next few weeks or not.

Very frustrating game tonight.

Packers lose 20-17 in Chicago on Monday night, due to Bears' sneaky springing of relative unknown punt returner Devin Hester on them. Don't know where that kid came from, but hopefully Mike McCarthy will mark that film so that next time these teams meet, we might be ready for him.
9/27/2010 11:47 PM
Eh, both of those returns Hester had were because of crappy kicks. No hang time at all.

Packers' offense fails to score in second half, barely hold off Lions rally and win 28-26 thanks in large part to third quarter INT returned for touchdown by Woodson, his eighth TD return as a Packer, putting him one past Herb Adderly into the franchise lead.

Not quite the statement game the media was predicting after the debacle in Chicago last Monday. Yikes.

Could Brandon Jackson suck any more?  Seriously, that was the biggest bust of a waiver wire pickup in FFL that I've ever seen.  I actually watched him (and the Pack) for the first time yesterday, and he looked lost.  You gotta think GB will be acquiring a quality RB sometime soon, to finish out the season,
