DES MOINES, IA - The Memphis Redbirds are headed back to the Pacific Coast League playoffs but it was not easy in a 7-6 win over Iowa Monday afternoon at Principal Park.
The Redbirds and I-Cubs battled back and forth for the fourth time in four days until the ninth inning when Mark Hamilton hammered a home run over the center field wall to give the 'Birds one final lead. It was not over there, however, with Iowa putting the tying run on third base before Josh Kinney nailed down his 17th save of the year. Hamilton led the 'Birds with three extra-base hits and the game-winning home run. Allen Craig and Daniel Descalso added two hits each. Jason Dubois hit two solo home runs to lead the I-Cubs.
Memphis reliever Adam Reifer earned the win in his Triple-A debut turning in a scoreless inning. Hung-Wen Chen took the loss allowing only Hamilton's home run in his two innings of work. Redbirds starter Evan MacLane allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits over five innings.
The Redbirds begin the defense of their 2009 PCL crown Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. with American South champ Oklahoma City at AutoZone Park. The 'Birds will host the RedHawks Wednesday and Thursday night before traveling to Oklahoma City. For playoff ticket information call 901.721.6000.
