#29 SG, #211 Overall, ***; promised 15 minutes. James Millar wasn't my first choice. He wasn't my second choice, either. I'm not sure if he was my third choice...what he is, though, is an interesting SG/SF hybrid player with lots of areas that can be improved and the work ethic to improve them. He'll never shoot FTs well, unfortunately, and he's not likely to be fast enough for a guard. He won't shoot well for a while, either...really, he's quite raw. However, he's what I could get. Saint John's gave me a little battle for him but I shook them off fairly easily. He should be quite athletic and a very good rebounder by the time he's gone. I think I will work on his low post rating so that I can utilize him as a backup for both the SG and SF slots, next year. Millar was among the first batch of recruits I targeted (after some hesitation) that were outside of a 200 mile radius from my school. Up until this point, we've been a purely regional team. Honestly, I liked it that way, but I was undercut by Syracuse and a bit of overreaching.

#24 SF, #115 Overall, ****; promised 20 minutes. Dan Lee is yet another poor FT shooter with a lot of potential in other areas. Boston College gave me a good fight for him, but I lead the whole time. He'll be my starting SF for three years. This year, he'll be backing up Jamie Williams, and might pull a little time at PF. I like his speed and rebounding and defense. I'm satisfied with everything else. Considering that I tend to recruit based around more what players don't have than what they do have, Dan Lee is one of the better players I've recruited. I'm not about to predict an NBA career, but it isn't out of the question.

#94 PF, unranked overall, ***; redshirting. Joseph Pringle is a bit on the raw side, but reminds me somewhat of Taylor Carey, a big man I had several years ago who came in with a low post rating in the 40s and as an NBA draft pick. His work ethic isn't stellar, but it isn't bad, either. He's athletic, shoots FTs fairly well, and doesn't have any significant weaknesses besides his GPA and his low post rating (which really isn't that bad). I'm certain that he'll be an important contributor by the time he's a junior. Maybe sooner.

#54 PF, #199 Overall, ****; no promises. I initially targeted Donald Glover as a redshirt candidate, but when recruiting started, he was considering SIM-coached UAB. In my mind, that made him too expensive to go after as a redshirt, and I sort of put him on the back burner for a while, to see if any human coaches would take a crack at him. None did, so while I had an ineligible SG lined up as a $120 special, I'd heard on the forums that it's unlikely for more than one ineligible to show up in any given year. Eventually, I decided that I'd rather have immediate and long-term depth at the big man slots than the cheap signing of the SG. Also, I decided that I could beat Boston College for Dan Lee while also throwing about $10k at Glover in order to pry him away from UAB. This maneuver effectively killed any chance of over money for next year's recruiting, but I thought it'd be worth it. Anyways, his passing is well below what I'd like to see, but otherwise, he's got just-below-target FT shooting, a good work ethic, and growable ratings everywhere. He'll be pretty good. Not a pro, but a good college player.

Well, this was an adventure. Richart, Koons, Sanders, Glover, and Lee were my initial targets. Syracuse has an A+ prestige and had 6 scholarships open, so once they showed up I didn't even bother to think about getting onto the considering lists for Richart and Koons. Glover, as I've mentioned before, was looking at UAB. I had Lee and Sanders to myself at first, but some team tried to take Lee before BC showed up, and I knocked them out of the running with one cycle of effort. I don't remember who it was. In the meantime, I went on a fishing expedition, looking for big men and SGs who would maybe consider me for just a promise of 15 minutes of PT. Unfortunately, I learned that without the start, such a promise isn't enough for anyone half decent, so that was a wasted $200 or so. But I did choose between the undecided guys of those 15 or 2
6/13/2008 12:17 PM
damn...cut off...I wish I'd copied what I had already written.

Here's the gist...I broke down every decision, and maybe if I have time later I'll do it again, but the point was, while I made a few goofs, I showed good judgment on when to fold a hand and when to go all in.

Grade: B (I could've pulled in a better class, with my prestige, in theory, but it's still solid)

This is definitely a quality win to start off the actual regular season. Harrington seems to be yet another starting SG who would prefer to have less pressure on him in terms of scoring.
