The draft is getting really interesting from a strategic perspective in these final rounds. The difference in remaining salary between teams is pretty stark. Chewy still had enough salary to draft a pretty solid version of Pedro Martinez in Round 20, whereas ronthegenius and Ribbentrop have been on a shoestring budget for several rounds now. There have been at least two teams that presented the option to draft Greg Maddux (1986 Cubs and 2005 Cubs), but neither owner bit.

As for me, I agonized over which Felix Jose to take. I really wanted the '91 version, who can play everyday and hits a bit better, but costs about $400K more than the '92 version I ended up drafting.

Technically, I had enough cap space to take '91 Felix and still fill out my roster, but it would have been tight. And without knowing which teams I'll be drafting from over the next 5 rounds, it felt too dicey to assume that I'd be able to consistently find seasons for $250K or below. All it was going to take was the wrong 19th century team with 16 players on its roster to blow my remaining buffer and put me over the cap and into the penalty.

So I scrimped and saved a measly $400K, but now I've got a starting CF who can only play 145 games. Was it worth it? I guess we'll find out...

I planned to get the PA and IP requirements first and those special auxiliary players later (say the last five picks ) ... I think I have a good Team but would not speculate as to how they actually play

That would be me passing on Greg Maddux. I already have 4 starting pitchers. Only back of the pen and scrubs to draft.

I think this all goes into the risk - reward ratio that we all have dealt with during this draft. I’ve constantly been thinking what positions should i prioritize early and which can be filled easier than others late? Do I reach for someone a little pricier than my avg $/PA or $/IP or grab a mop and some positional scrubs when there’s no clear choice to fill an open position?
All of these variables make this draft possibly my favorite draft across any sim game ever on WIS.

Any word from jfranco yet? You could try starting a thread in the Simleague Baseball forum asking if anyone knows him personally and can confirm all is well.

There's an interesting meta-game happening. Earlier in the draft, I think at least some owners were being more careful about not dealing a great hand to the next owner in line unless it got them a player they really wanted.

Now, however, I think many owners are sufficiently strapped for cash--and enough players and teams are off the board--that most of us can't afford to be so cautious. And that's a potential bonanza for owners who still have money to spend and key positions to fill.

calhoop didn't take a single starting pitcher during the first 15 rounds. Then he got Eddie Plank, Lefty Grove, and Orel Hershiser between Rd 16 and Rd 19.

I don't know if he'll end up with a better team because of this, but it's been very intriguing to watch such different strategies play out.

Maybe it's just me, but I tried not to overthink it. If a good player was there at a respectable price, at a position of need, I took him. I didn't want to get caught in the trap of waiting for something that might never come. Also, while it's definitely not as fun having to take scrubs for the final five rounds, you ultimately need some scrubs - so in the final construction of your team, it really doesn't matter where you take them.

When the Yankees came up recently, I took Bernie Williams' best season, leaving Mariano and Jeter on the table. They are still on the table and the draft has moved away from the Yankees.
