tannermcc always gets a lot of production out of limited talent. He also always trains his guys for all three defenses. In my recollection, he mostly plays zone/press, occasionally breaking out the man/press, depending on the matchup.

In reviewing tanner's schedule, he was beaten mostly by teams playing an uptempo with at least a halfcourt press. He was beaten by other teams, too, but something like 6 of the 9 losses were with that formula, and between a -2 and a +2 on defense, on all of them. About a quarter of his shots are from behind the arc, and Baylor sinks 35.8% of those.

The other participants in the Final Four are Nebraska and Wisconsin. Nebraska is a newcomer to the elite, with a coach straight from DII and a four year cycle of program building. Wisconsin, on the other hand, was in the Championship Game last year, and the Elite 8 the year before that. Both are talented, though Maryland is the most talented team in the field.

Goddammit! How many times do I have to make it to The Final Four or the Championship Game before I win a DI Championship?!?

Coach, even with that Final 4 loss, it was still a heck of a season, one that everyone on campus is proud of! I just hope you're around next season to take us even further.

[edit:]

Amazingly, only Hargraves decided to declare for the Draft early. That means that we'll have Jaco and Lyons next year when I wasn't counting on that (but knew it would be a big help). I will be losing only 3 players this year, in Hargraves, Avalos, and Grady.

Hargraves can be ably replaced by Hill, who knows the system perfectly and has only a slight drop-off in athleticism, defense, and ball-handling.

Ernest Bold can step in as the backup SF next year, and improve towards being the #1 SF as a junior.

Grady can't be replaced easily, but we do have Derek Phillips coming off of a redshirt and needing playing time, which will be freed up with Grady's departure.

I have surpassed oldresorter in overall wins with the program, and in postseason wins with the program. While the base that he created proved useful in the beginning of my tenure, here, I think that I can safely say that the program is fully mine at this juncture.

#15 PF, #53 Overall, ****; no promises. Another high ceiling guy who isn't ready to contribute at a high level, Brent Grady will be riding the pine pretty hard his first year, but should become a very, very good player with some practice time and perhaps a bit of time on the floor. I deeply hope that his stamina tops out in the 90s (though the 80s would be fine) and not at the lower end of "high." This one has the chance to be amazing, though his FT shooting will never be great.
Grady eventually became a star for me, though on a defense-first team (all of my recent teams seem to be defense-first), he never had great offensive stats. Nonetheless, his contributions were significant in three successful years, and he helped spell our more experienced players as a freshman...a year we went to the Championship. He will be hard to replace.

#7 PG, #33 overall, *****; promised the start, promised 15 minutes. While he hasn't technically signed yet, Millard Hargraves will be joining the team officially within a few hours - I pulled ahead maybe $20k ago and decided that since I wasn't looking to fill the last scholarship, it'd be a waste not to just use the remaining funds...and I know that UVA is already out of resources, so I figured I'd get him up now, since I have a free moment. Hargraves is already an outstanding pass-first point guard. He will become an outstanding all-around point guard...though I suppose he could top out in terms of his perimeter rating somewhere in the 70s, that's still just fine...look at James Bourget, who school early and was drafted with less athleticism than Hargraves. If, somehow, this player stays for 4 years, I predict that he will be the assists leader of all time for UMD.
Millard Hargraves was a good, but not great guard for the Terps. For some reason, his assist-to-turnover ratio was consistently mediocre. I think once we go to the new engine, a guy like this would probably have many more assists, but in his three years with me, he never was anything more than an average PG. He was pretty decent as a scorer in his sophomore season. This year, he was less efficient with the ball, there. Anyways, he was a good component but I don't think I'll be saying to myself, "if only I still had Millard Hargraves."

#6 SF, #42 Overall, *****; JuCo Junior, no promises. Jack Avalos would be fantastic if he were a freshman, but he also would have been much, much more expensive to recruit. I didn't like any of the freshman SFs I saw and I needed a good backup for Lyons. Avalos will be that, and depending on how quickly he develops, he could conceivably get up to NBA level before graduating in two years. I will be practicing conditioning with him very heavily.
Avalos was the best JuCo Jr. I have ever had. He played well and developed well, and might even sneak into the NBA Draft's 2nd round, though I doubt it. Considering that Lyons is staying, Avalos has afforded my team some real quailty depth and I am very pleased with my decision to sign him.

yeah UMD is in the process of taking a top tier recruit from Georgetown right now. I was shocked to see you go, taz. It looks like you've got a decent replacement, but so far he doesn't know how to pick his battles.

#16 PG, #73 Overall, ****; no promises. Charles Gaertner came to UMD unopposed. He's apparently got very high potential in perimeter and athleticism, but maybe I'm just reading the evaluation wrong. I'm hoping his speed tops out around 90, because the bottom level possible is an 84 and that's just not good enough at the tier one schools to really be a star. He's going to be the second backup guard for both spots for this year and should take over a role as the starter, eventually (with his speed, probably at SG, provided he can shoot reasonably well by then). He should improve decently. The NBA is possible but not terribly likely...though the same could be said of some early entries I've had in the past.

#2 PF, #2 Overall, *****; promised 10 minutes. Kevin Williams, in contrast to Gaertner, was highly targeted by Georgetown. We won the battle in spite of having two fewer scholarships (there was a 2/3 grade or better prestige advantage for us). Anyways, he looks like a fantastic Press PF, other than his stamina, which will improve, and his FT shooting, which won't. In general, he should be a force on defense and offense.
5/30/2010 1:46 AM
after two lost exhibitions under the new engine, I'm thinking that the Fullcourt Press is not a great option, anymore. I'll probably shift over to a halfcourt Press/Man for now.
