I think we need to trade Matt Holliday. Anybody?

Is Matt Holliday worth his $17 million salary for 2010? According to fangraphs.com, which puts a dollar figure on the value of a player's overall performance, Holliday is having a season worth $24.2 million. Only 10 major-league players have a higher value, including Albert Pujols, who ranks eighth with a value of $24.8 million. Among major-league left fielders, Holliday went into the weekend ranked second in homers, second in RBIs and second in combined onbase-slugging percentage. He was also rated third-best defensively among LFs in the John Dewan Fielding Bible ratings.

Huh? If you put four $25mil players are on the field surrounded twenty-one AAAA players, you aren't winning more than 60 games. Probably a lot less than that. Heck, the Cardinals can barely stay above .500 with Holldiay, Pujols, and three Cy Young contenders.

Well, they finish strong at 86-76. I'd say they were one of the more unlucky teams. They played a handful of games under their exp win%. WIS was pretty high on them in their power rankings all season, so there is plenty to look forward to next year, which will be last year the Cardinals have a shot at the playoffs, so they had better get it done!

So, I'm watching MLB network and they're talking about the ROY award. Um...no mention of Jaime Garcia??? Whats so special about 18 HRs that you ignore 163 innings and a 2.70 ERA? I can't use any other word than 'incredible' to describe his rookie campaign. This isn't the Cy Young/MVP awards where the pitcher has his own award, so I'm not sure what I'm missing.

Looks like Pujols has specifically stated he wishes to get an extension this offseason.

He should be in the conversation; he had a great rookie season.  FWIW, Posey gets my vote.  Great offense at a position that generally doesn't have it.

The Howard contract kills you.  He's going to ask for significantly more.

The only thing that is going to kill us is that Holliday contract.

Amongst the Gold Glove awards ... no question about it, Yadier deserved his.  From a more in-depth sabermetric analysis, Brendan Ryan should've had the GG at SS.  But as we all know, the GG voting process gets tainted by percieved higher value being assigned to comparatively better hitters or higher profile players.  Such is the case with Tulowitzki getting the SS GG.  I don't have really have a problem with that though in this case - Tulowitzki is also a terrific defender.  It's not like Ryan got robbed by a Jeter Scenario or somesuch.  The 1B GG also could've gone to a few people.  Pujols getting it is likely due to the bolstering of his higher profile - 2010 was not his best defensive season at 1B in comparison to the prior years.  Although he earned it - he's an elite defender at 1B who made some breathtaking defensive plays over the season.

We can keep Brendan 'The Stache' Ryan. I like him.
Yeah, his defense was freakin' unreal.  He had a few rough patches defensively throughout the year - but in the end, his cumultative +/- and UZR ratings were league best.  His hitting was awful and took a huge nosedive from the prior year.  BABIP-wise though, he had a lot of bad luck.  Still, he had a plus WAR and should be significantly better with any sort of hitting uptick next season (he can't hit any worse).

His double-play partner, Skip ... I don't trust.  Although bringing in a viable replacement like Orlando Hudson would probably not make sense from a cost perspective.  I think we're screwed .... Skip will be at 2B next season due to budgetary purposes unless Descalso lights up down in AAA.   We need him to play even average defense and to get his OBP back up to over .350 since we are in dire need of a leadoff hitter who can reliable get on base.

Getting rid of Brendan Ryan would be a huge mistake both budgetwise and valuewise. Skip is definitly the less valuable player, but I don't really have a problem with him either. Other than the first couple of months this past season, he's been extremely consistent since he's been here. Basically a consistent, slightly below average 2nd baseman who doesn't cost much.
I don't have a good opinion of how to fix this team. Mozeliak has been trying to play Yankee ball with a Cardinal budget. If it were me, I'd try to trade Holliday and his mammoth contract. Also trade Carpenter while you can still get something for him. Neither of those things are going to happen, of course, so in the best case scenario we field nearly the same team and make the playoffs. We were one of the more unlucky teams last season, so we still have a good shot. 2012-2016 will be doom and gloom for sure, so here's to a last hurrah!
