You alway have the choice with what people you will surround yourself. If you chose to fraternize with racists or fascists, you made a bad decision and can't argue with being called a bad person. The guy (assuming he spoke the truth) should have looked for a different way of making his statement.
I'm friends with a lot of people, from all different aspects of my life . . . work, my golf league, people I've coached baseball with, parents of my kids classmates/friends, people I went to school with, etc.
I can't say with any honesty that I know with 100% accuracy the personal ideologies, political and/or social affiliations, etc. of EVERYBODY I consider to be a friend. The close ones, yes. The casual ones . . . of course not. Nobody can.
Neither can you.
You probably need to take a step of two down from the pedestal you're putting yourself on. I would bet that some of your "casual" friends might surprise you with if they fully exposed their inner thoughts and feelings to you about social issues.
