Round 2 results...
Guilford def. Emory & Henry 85-74
  • E&H gave Guilford a scare, but a 10 minute second half scoring drought sealed their fate. Guilford had a balanced attack led by John Bronson's 16 points and Scott Salisbury's 15 points and 13 rebounds. Daniel Braxton led E&H with 20 points and 13 assists in the losing effort.
Roanoke def. Virginia Wesleyan 83-57

  • Led by Bradley Seo's 6 three's and 26 points, Roanoke pulled away early and never looked back rolling over Virginia Wesleyan.
Washington & Lee def. Lynchburg 85-69

  • W&L opened an early lead and steadily pulled away against a disoriented and frustrated Lynchburg team who was tagged with two technicals during the game. James Western led W&L with 20 points and the Big O Oscar Murphy added 13 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. A confused and thoroughly frustrated Coach Barretchap wondered aloud why his "rival" (a very loose term kind of like how Vanderbilt and Tennessee are rivals in football) Coach Whunt would double his SF off the bench and how his big men could not take advantage of the extra space.
Bridewater def. Washington & Jefferson 82-58

  • Rounding out the night of large leads, Bridgewater advanced to the semifinals and strengthened their resume ("resumay") with an easy win over W&J. Cornell Apple led the victors with 19 points and William Moon added 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks in the winning effort.

Catching up on the 21st National Tournament in Iba
Round 1
Washington & Lee upset by packed-in Widener defense
Widener used the infamous -5 defense to upset 4th seeded W&L 77-66 in the first round of the national tournament. Craig Currie led the cheaters, er, victors with 31 points on 8-15 shooting from beyond the arc despite being double-teamed much of the night. Widener used a 14-3 run in the first half to take a 12 point lead, saw it cut to 2 early in the second half on a tip in by Oscar Murphy, but held on to the lead and pulled away late for the win. The "Big O" capped his career with 16 points on just 4-13 shooting. The Generals struggled from deep going 8-22 despite a defense geared to stopping the interior.
Guilford advances to 2nd round
Daniel Burgoyne nailed a 3 to start the game and Guilford never looked back taking a 77-56 win over Carroll. The Quakers opened an early 9 point lead and was never threatened as they advanced to the 2nd round of the national tournament. Scott Salisbury led the Quakers with 18 points and the Guilford bench outscored the opposing bench 24-10 to move on.
Eastern Mennonite blindsided by Rockford
Eastern Mennonite played about 12-19 minutes of solid basketball, but Rockford played 40 minutes pulling away by outscoring the Royals by 22 in the second half to win 91-55. Karl Thompson led Eastern Mennonite with 9 points and 8 assists. Tommy Breckenstein scored 17 1st half points en route to 21 on the night to lead 5 Rockford players in double digits to advance to the 2nd round.

Round 2 of the National Tournament
Guilford eliminates SUNY Potsdam
Guilford used two early 3's by Daniel Burgoyne and a 19-3 run capped by Scott Salisbury's three-point play the old-fashioned way to defeat legendary coach mswilso2's SUNY Potsdam team. Salisbury led the Quakers with 24 points and 9 rebounds in the win. Potsdam cut the lead to 8 early in the second half on Jason Davis' two free throws but could get no closer. Guilford advances to the sweet 16 to face a well-balanced Calvin team.
Round 2 of the PI
Bridgewater defeats Knox to move to Elite 8 of PI

Led by Grant Estes' 17 points on 8-10 shooting, Knox was able to close the gap to 7 with 3:07 to go in the game, but Bridgewater answered with a 10-1 run to put it away. Defense was the key as the Eagles held Knox to 34% FG shooting for the game.
