Cap Athletic Conf - Red Recruit Rankings Topic

Keep including yours man... I personally love seeing the rankings and of course yours are going to be higher as if I did something like this, I would recruit the higher rated ones myself as well... It is certainly fun to look at every year...

As for James Thomas, he is a decent player that is really looking like a SG in my opinion... The poor athleticism hurts him along with rebounding but if he has some high potential in stamina and some other categories, he could certainly improve a great deal in my opinion and still is a pretty decent recruit...

Thanks for your input fellas. FYI, the formula I use to evaluate the players I pursue is different from the official Red Rating equation. With my own recruits, I'm pursuing guys based on the system I'm running and specific areas of need. That being said, there are probably still some shared tendencies toward weighting certain categories for certain positions.

As for Thomas, I agree with Ty. Being a top 25 SF in the 87th percentile qualifies him as a good recruit. However court, I think you may be a little misguided as to why he’s not higher. His 25 ATH is a major culprit – that’s low for a SF. If you look at the CAP SF’s recruits, they all have an ATH above 35 – not a coincidence. The elite are all 50+. And he’s not “low” in rebounding, he’s a non-rebounder. I would consider low at that position to be b/t 20-30. At 13, best case it will take Thomas a couple seasons to even reach “low” rebounding status. Which brings me to same conclusion Ty reached – I think he’d be better suited as a SG, although his BH + PA won’t be quite as strong at that position.

Either way courtmagic, I’m glad you spoke up and voiced your opinion over Thomas and his rating/ranking. Quite frankly, I was hoping there might be a little more of that here, with greater interaction and debate over recruits. In that respect, I’ve been a little disappointed. Maybe the new forum post I created for all of DIII will generate that, though there hasn’t been any response yet.

Ty, thanks for your imput and assessment. I do appreciate it. It's basically what I came up with. A 6'6" SG with good speed and perimiter.

Red, in reguards to your personnel recruiting system, I do the same thing myself. I assess my needs as much as, or more, than whomever is the best guy out there. Whoever you get has to fit into your system and what system/style you play. That's why I went with Thomas. I have 3 Centers and 3 PFs (one of which I use as my backup SF while I groom Thomas because he has a 52 in Perimeter), but only 2 PGs & 2 SGs. So I thought it would be wiser to go after a SF with SG abilities instead of PF abilities, in case one of my Guards gets injured, I could fill the slot for a couple of games with Thomas and not take too much of a hit.

As far as the other conferences speaking up, making opinions, or asking questions, maybe they don't, or haven't ever, looked at the Forums and are unaware about it. I know the guy down at Oglethorp looks at it, but maybe you need to site mail him, the guy at La Grange, and the guy at Piedmont, along with the guys up in the North Atlantic, like MMA, MPI, Castleton, and the guys in the NESC and so on. Give them a little push in the right direction, as the saying goes. Just a thought.

Anyways, I'm looking real forward to next season because I'm gonna need a PF, a SF, and a SG. Keep up the good work.

gotta agree with my conference mates on this one court. If you plan to play Thomas at the SF position, you are going to lose the rebounding battle there against most quality teams. His rebounding is very bad for a SF even a DIII one, especially with a not so great athleticism as I believe that contributes to the rebounding side of things. Not saying you could not succeed with him at the SF but you would have to make sure your bigs could really rebound and your guards can help in the rebounding area as well.

But all in all, Red did rate him as the 21st best SF which is no slap in the face, still a good recruit!

Thanks Randy,

To me this is a learning process and another tool I can add, and use to my own personal betterment here in the World of What If. When I was recruiting and looking at Thomas and his Stats, I already assumed the loss of his Rebounds as well as his Low Post. I'm hoping I can groom him into an outside Ace and trade Perimeter & Passing (assists) for Rebounding and Low Post. At least that was my hope when I recruited him. Time will tell if this pans out or not.

Court - FWIW, I personally value REB much higher than PER. I've had guys that have had average and below average PER that have shot well. The same can't be said for REB.

Hey Red,

How, if any, would my guy "Thomas" change and/or differ in the Red Ratings if you flip/flopped PE for LP? I see now and understand about the low ATH and low REB, but to me (my opinion for what it's worth) LP and PE can be interechangable depending on how you play a Small Forward and what type of system you play him in. Whether you play him more as an inside type of guy (PF), or whether you play him as an outside type of guy (SG).

Good start here for the CAP, as we land 2 of the top 6, and 3 of the top 15 PG's in DIII. But we're top heavy as there's a bit of a drop off from there to Salisbury's Spencer - a decent recruit but a little too pedestrian to get real excited over.

Bonner and Sanflilippo look like very good, but not spectacular, recruits. They're razor close, with Bonner's significant speed advantage giving him the slight nod.

Perhaps the biggest surprise here are the underwhelming first signings by mandi in his return season to the CAP. Struggling to crack the top 80 is not the mandi we all remember. In fairness, I don't remember all that well how difficult it is to recruit with a poor prestige - but my initial impression is that there had to be at least slightly better talent available - after all, Horner rates lower than 60% of the rest of DIII PG's.

Compared to years past, the top PG's in this year's CAP class are a big improvement from last year's, when we didn't crack the top 15 (no Goucher, York, or SMCM recruits), but Goucher's Spraggin's from season 36 remains a step above this year's top signings.

Quick question for you guys - should I bypass the CAP ratings and just jump right to the DIII rankings?
