Pitching Affects Defense Topic

example:

Ozzie Smith 1982 NL team Offended by Offensitivity 23-9-0= +14
Ozzie Smith 1982 AL team Leather Heroes 15-19-1= -5

This is unexpected. Modern pitchers may not have a positive influence on Smith being that he is a modern fielder but I would at least expect a negative influence with a pre 1920 pitcher (NL) team. Seems he got better with an NL influence.

With a player like '82 Ozzie Smith, I wonder how
much of that difference isn't due to one playing fatigued.
3/18/2010 5:19 PM
that's a good point just. Maybe the owners can report on that for us. Sure need some kind of explanation why the difference. Maybe I'll put this in the league forum....

For whatever it's worth, modern pitching doesn't appear to have helped my team's errors. Everyone is either on pace to match or beat their performance histories.

The worst offenders: '06 VMart averages 4 errors over 111 games, he has logged 10 in just 105. And of course '08 Nap Lajoie has eased off his blistering pace, but still has 20 errors over 105 games, he goes for 22 over 160 games on his performance history.

Everyone else is either right on or just slightly over. I think Pete Ward and Billy North are the only ones to ever play at less than 100%

A tale of two Doppelgangers...the only difference is the pitching staff...both teams in the Astrodome

D-70 110+ 104 E 1-

D-20 110+ 150 E 4-

For me, the pre-1920 pitchers are having a huge impact...a 50% increase in errors, which is what is supposed to happen, right? What is interesting to me, is that the pitching era has had virtually no impact on +/-. And D-20 has won 3 more games than D-70.

I haven't played my Ozzie fatigued at all for Offended by Offensitivity. I see that Leather Heroes has been playing his Ozz consistently at 97 fatigue. But it's hard to believe that slight change is impacting his error rate so dramatically.

I see that it's not just the FP that is different; also the range factor, boosting up my Ozz's + plays. That part must be due to the difference in pitchers. Pre-1920's would generate a lot more ground balls, I should think.

Nope; busted! Leather heroes GB/FG = 1.21, OBO = 1.18. I'm back to contemplating a park effect.

"errors/ home game" = 2.04 "errors/ away game"= 1.55

The numbers above suggest a higher error rate when playing at my home field, Palace of the Fans, which has the largest OF area I could find.

So this confuses things further. Unless the Palace selectively increases the error rates selectively for OFs, Ozz ought to be doing even worse because of all the games played at the Palace. I'd love to have an actual count of whether his errors occurred home or away, but I haven't been tracking that. I will eventually have enough data collected to see if Palace selectively impacts OF vs IF error rates though.

From my understanding, fatigue has a very large effect on errors. I went through Leather Heroes box scores and here is the break down on Smith's errors:

100% vs NL (5 GAMES)

2 Errors (1/2.5 games)

100% vs AL (33 GAMES)

5 Errors (1/6.6 games)

Fatigued vs NL (19 GAMES)

4 Errors (1/4.8 games)

Fatigued vs AL (48 GAMES)

10 Errors (1/4.8 games)

NL Total (6 errors in 24 games):

1 error every 4 games

AL Total (15 errors in 81 games) :

1 error every 5.4 games

I think this shows that Ozzie has done worse against the 1920's pitchers and when fatigued... and that both of those circumstances can account for his increased error rate over the other Ozzie that ha been playing at 100% all season.
