How To Rebuild A Disaster 2: Season 17-? Topic

No, he would get something like 5/85 on the open market.  In some worlds he might even get the max.  But I assure you he will NEVER sign a 2/20 contract in ANY world.

Some people might be concerned with the fact I have only four ML pitchers at the moment (NL teams usually need 12) but I have two pitchers in the minors that can be called up, and I'm consistently claiming two players on waivers each real-life day to fill my roster. My waiver claims so far:

P Roger Miller (minors)
2B Tuck Walsh (potential backup making ML minimum)
RF Rafael Tarraga (projected starter, making 343k)

My currently pending waiver claims:

LF Angel Mendoza (projected to play at AAA)
P Julio Cordero (projected SuB)
P Brian Michalak (projected starter #3 or #4)

As you see, my roster will be full by spring training at this rate assuming 3 or 4 Rule V picks.
Walsh- he'll be good at stealing bases, but his defense is too weak for 2B and his bat is too weak for LF/RF, so he's kinda useless beyond pinch running.
Tarraga- belongs in AAA
Cordero- he's a decent 11th/12th pitcher, I'd use him as a mop up man
Michalak- belongs in AAA

Wasting roster spots on turds like these and then 3-4 Rule 5 guys is a death wish.

Too bad BB isn't in MG, he would be great for mocking the Hiram Strickland deal.

"HAHA!  He was only worth 2/12!"

Confusing what a player is asking for with what they'll end up signing for is a n00b mistake.

Paying him under $10M/season is a steal.  Fact.

tankerwood, you don't play in a vaccum.   When you're losing 114, someone is winning those games.   You aren't competitive.   Teams that aren't competitive are bad for a world.  If 90 wins puts you in 1st place, you're in first place and the playoffs.   Winning 10 more or 20 more doesn't matter except for playoff seeding.  A bye is nice but not necessary.

The difference between us is simple:  I think you should try to win BL games whether you're a contender or not.  You think it's only necessary if you can win enough to be a contender.    I'm sure I can win 70 today and 90 next season.  You're a lot more comfortable winning 50 today and 100 next season.

Your way is fine.   Just don't think it's some noble way to build a team.  It's just tanking.  It's the easy way to build a team.
Last time I looked the game was called Hardball DYNASTY, not Hardball single season. Tanking is losing games on purpose, by doing things like playing Tryout Camp guys in the bigs while better plays sit in your minors. Cutting payroll so you can sign a few top prospects and trading veterans for more prospects, while still playing your best talent at the big league level, is called rebuilding. While I only won 49 games that first year, I did evrything I could, WITHOUT MORTGAGING MY FUTURE, to win as many as I could. And everyone in the league got to play me 10 times so they each had equal shots at picking up the smae number of wins against me. If I had l;et all my players go to 0(0) and played the second half of the season like that, I see your argument, I have given the teams I play later in the year a bigger advantage over me than the early ones. I did not do that.

As far as the "easy way" to build a team - if we both have a tree to chop down and have the choice of a chainsaw or a hand axe, I'm sorry but I am using the chainsaw. You may feel all proud of yourself and pound your chest or whatever over having chopped it down with a hand axe, but we both got the tree chopped down. Does it really matter how we got it done?

It's not always about the desination, the journey counts too.

1) I do not enjoy paying $24.95 for 3 months of rooting for my team to lose
2) If you enjoy playing Madden, some people like playing on Rookie mode, others like playing on All-Madden.  I always played on All-Madden, even though I could have had way better stats and had a much easier time winning the superbowl on Rookie mode.

The reason why your tree analogy fails is because you're talking about a tangible task that needs to be completed to reach a certain end.  You get firewood or the opportunity to build a strip mall or whatever you're seeking.  HBD is a hobby where you don't really get any tangible rewards, you're just happy with yourself for a few moments after achieving your goal.  Personally, I'm happier to achieve the championship goal without a handful of high draft picks carrying my team to the top.

It's two totally different situations.

1) I am not rooting for my team to lose, I am being realistic in knowing that my first season will not be good -- but I still try to win as many games as I can.
2) Awful analogy. Playing Madden on Rookie versus on All-Madden is more like being in a lousy public world versus a top private world. Two completely different games.

FWIW, I think deano's Madden analogy is dead on.  As is your reply.  You and I play two completely different games.    It's still Madden.   But you're removing the salary cap and creating monster players to sign.  I'm taking the Raiders and leaving Jamarcus at QB.   I just don't think I'd have fun playing with a group of created 99s against the Dolphins.

Getting back to this team, those trades that were made were absolutely horrible.  When I first saw this team, I saw a team that with some savvy moves and the right FA signings could definitely have a winning record.  Considering the division was won with 82 games last season, that makes this team a legit playoff contender.  There was plenty of cap space, some good trade bait, and solid pieces already in place.  When you rebuild, you don't have to completely destroy the foundation to do so.

This is your problem, you are still in love with Jamarcus Purple.

If you keep throwing him at 0(0), he will get injured. It was a long time ago but I did it with a garbage minor league level with training camp pitchers. I think I had 20something pitcher injuries at that particular level"

I think we finally know who is tanking.
