ratings preference...contact versus eye... Topic

moy how would the guy with higher contact get more strikeouts? Have you bothered to check any stats, EVER? Low contact is going to get more strikeouts, that is what the contact rating controls.
Right.

Don't worry, moy knows he is retarded.

I have a formula that I use to predict performance (OPS) of players.  It's pretty accurate (R^2 of 0.79 for other stat geeks).

Using that formula, Eye and Contact are about even when Power and Splits are around 50.

When Power and Splits are higher, Contact is more valuable....when they're lower, Eye is more valuable.

I think this was addressed a bit earlier in another manner(and overlooked).   If a guy can hit, you want him swinging.   If he can't, you'd like him walking.

Sometimes a guy can hit because he has plate discipline and pitch recognition.  You can't just say, "he has a .350 AVG, so I want him hacking."  He may have a .350 average because he has a good eye and waits for the right pitch.  Put him up there hacking, and he loses that.  Again, if we're talking HBD, I'll defer to those who say contact is more important at high levels, but if we're talking basic baseball principles, approach leads to an ability to hit.

Its a nice case study in to how our Financial Institutions have been operating the last few years though

This is HBD, and it is a discussion of how the ratings are programmed within the engine, and how that impacts player performance.

This is an HBD forum.  I assume we're talking about HBD unless otherwise stated.   JVF was pretty specific with his comment.

As for the real world, I think you're talking about an Ichiro vs. Jeter scenario.   Ichiro has a high BA because he doesn't swing and miss.   Jeter has a high BA because he hits his pitch.

Back to the topic at hand: I generally prefer Batting Eye over Contact, although it really depends on your team make up.  I certainly wouldnt pass up a guy that can help me because he has low batting eye

I wasn't the one who started using real life players as examples, so I fail to understand the condescension.  But you're right, it is an HBD forum.

I always think back to this guy when people ramble on about eye.   Essentially 80 POW/CON/VR with 35 eye.

Hits .280 and slugs .500 with a .340 OBP.    You can't sell me that low eye is a career killer if the other ratings are where you need them to be.

isaak, I don't recall using real players until my last post but I do know you quoted my post when you responded.   And you seemed to dispute what I posted.  I just wanted to be clear that I wasn't referring to anything but HBD.

Career OPS of .856.  Hard to pass on that in your lineup.

Gotcha.  I wasn't talking about you.  I said something about OBP and being able to increase OBP by hitting more, and someone started throwing players at me.

I should know better than to get involved.  I should also stick exclusively to HBD.  I'll learn...maybe.

What about this guy:

Seems like you can survive with 40-50 contact and a huge eye, too.

There are a lot of really good players with 40 contact, 90 power, 90 eye.   And the 40 spits barely seem relevant with a lot of them.

Right.  I think we're probably agreeing more than we're disagreeing.  I would probably tend to favor eye more than you, but in the end, you're going to need balance.
