Love to see these interesting combinations coming together, and some players you rarely see. Taking a look at another batch...
badja - Walt Frazier, Ron Harper
sawtech7 - Chauncey Billups, Alvin Robertson
eleibowitz - Anfernee Hardaway, Clyde Drexler
caldreaming - Jerry West, Julius Erving
I'm not loving the pairing of Frazier and R. Harper, but I also may not be appreciating the subtle differences brought by the recent salary overhaul. Three years ago this might have been a great backcourt, but I don't see a lot of assists or any significant perimeter game. Could be the beginnings of a very competent squad in which everyone does a little of everything, but the jury's still out at this point.
Obviously love Billups in this sim. Played the right way, he'll average 20-10 while shooting 45-50-90. There are very few PGs I'd consider above his 05-06 season at any cap level. Alvin is a very curious choice... Lots of seasoned owners (including uvasooner) will tell you he's classic sim poison. The last time I used him he seemed to pretty much single-handedly sabotage what should have been a playoff team. The intriguing thing, though, is how he and Chauncey complement each other. You have a PG who gives you 3s and FTs and takes good care of the ball, but gives you no steals. You have a SG who's an amazing thief but will give up the ball as much as he gets it for you. Together they give you solid playmaking. So I'm not loving this combo, but it bears watching...this might finally be the way to use Robertson.
Penny and Glide are an intriguing pair. Drexler's one of those SGs who's a little hard to use in the sim because he doesn't give you much in the way of 3s that lots of us are used to stocking up on in wing players. I personally think there were several better (more sim-friendly) PG choices available when Hardaway was taken. But the pairing of them gives you a couple of Swiss army knives that provide a lot of flexibility going forward. Nice start on both rebounding and assists. Potentially an expensive backcourt in this cap, though, depending on which seasons are used.
I love the chutzpah of the Jerry and Julius pairing. Great to see some love for pre-'84 players who aren't monster rebounders. West can give you a lot depending on the season, and is probably underrated by a lot of owners - some assists, steals, lots of FTs, and a few 3s. My first thought about this pair, though, is that you've got a great start on turnovers. The rest of the core lineup will need to take good care of the ball to even out the possession battle.
