But at the same Time, I have to take into account my Future Committee and Pitching Committe and their reports on available Players.  And then I have to decide what I want to go for now and later in the Draft.

Eddie Collins, will have 4,850 PA's with an average of .347 during his Career with me 1920-1927!

Eddie Collins & Ty Cobb - Outbacker's team will have a few baserunners.

Pandemonium has broken out at the Draft Center as outbacker announces the selection of Ty Cobb.  The selection was made at 10:28 with only 2 minutes remaining on the Clock.  I kind of knew that Cobb was our selection all along, but I did want to look at all possible picks.  I was also a bit hesitant about, not coming away with a Pitcher.  But you have to play the hand your dealt and how could you pass up Cobb in Round 2?  Please excuse, as I want to join the Party.

I will need a proxy at 5:30.  Let me know if you can make a pick for me.  Thanks.

Congrads on getting 2 Hall of Famers with your 2 picks... Getting Ty Cobb in 2nd round was nice.. But who is going to Pitch for you?  By the time you get your 3rd round picks... will there be any Quality Pitchers left to draft???   I doubt it...  Good Luck with that...
kallison-Good Question-Well, to begin with there weren't many Quality  Pitchers to begin with.  So I'm not so sure, that there's going to be much of a  a difference between whats comin up in the next 3 or 4 Rounds being that all the quality Pitchers are gone.  Even for those Owners who have a Quality Pitcher at this time, who's going to be their #2-#3-#4 guys?  But all in all your point is well taken, and thats one of the reasons that I didn't make my pick till 10:28 with 2 minutes to go; I was very much considering the Pitcher Option at the expense of Cobb.

I was wanting Cobb also, couldn't believe I almost had the chance to get Sisler and Cobb with the first two picks
10/2/2011 11:40 AM
Yeah-I was as surprised that Sisler fell, as far as he did, as I was with Cobb.  Andy Messersmith, was very much on our minds in the Draft Room and was a big reason why it took us till 10:28 to make our Pick.

outbacker Meets with Reporters

Reporter-
Now that you have Collins and Cobb, what direction can we expect your Team to go in?

outbacker-Its really to early to say.

Reporter-But with the selection of Collins and Cobb haven't you committed yourself to a hitting Team that wants to win now?

outbacker-No

Reporter-I hardly see you haveing a Pitching Team, as all the top Pitchers are gone.

outbacker-Well 1st of all, I hardly see any Team thats going to be a Pitching Team.

Reporter-Alright then, there well be Teams with Averg. Pitching and Teams with bad Pitching; at this point aren't you more likely to have a bad Pitching Team?

outbacker-No

Reporter-With your 3rd Round Pick coming up late tomorrow night, can you give us some indication as to who you might be picking?

outbacker-I have a list of 12 Players, and I'm looking to see who might fall to me.

Reporter-Who are they?

outbacker-I can't tell you that by I can tell you that 2 of them are from, my visit to the Player Compex.

I have over a 100 Players working out at the Complex, all Canidates to be selected in the 1st 2 Rounds.  As things appear a bit slow in the Draft Center, I've decided to take a ride over to our Player Complex.  Two Ball Players, catch my attention in the Batting Cage  Both guys are future Hall of Famers.  The 1st of the two to step into the Batting Cage measures 6'0 195 Ibs , 24 Years Old and Bats Left Handed.  He swings hard at the Ball, everytime its Pitched to him.  He seems to throw his body into every swing.  Needless to say he connected on about a dozen Balls and sent them towering out of the complex.  The 2cond of the Two steps into the Batting Cage and measures 6'2 188 Ibs, 30 Years Ild and Bats Left Handed.  This guy has a much smother swing and hits some wicked line drives out of the Complex.  I wrote down their names, and continued my stroll in the Complex
Every one at the Compex keeps asking me the same question. Mr Outbacker do you want to win now or build for the future.  And my ans. is always the same; I don't know.  I guess, to even to begin to ans. that question, you'd have to compare the Players who will be available in 21/71 with Players who will be available in later years.  In other words if you want to make a certain Year, a building Year, then you'll want that Year to be a Year when the Draft is Rich, because you'll probably be part it.  Then, I took a walk over to the Pitchers and Catchers.  Some of the Pitchers are throwing with a Batter, while other are throwing only to their Catcher.  I see this Right Handed Pitcher on the mound 5"11" 185 Ibs and 38 Years Old Pitching to a Batter with his Catcher and Umpire.  This guy appeared to have unbelievable contol as it seemed every Pitch was in the Strike Zone, and for the time that I was their he kept every Ball in the Yard.  But this Pitcher was sweating like a pig on the mound.  I wondered how this old man was invited to our Complex, being that it was only for 1st and 2cond Rounders. But yet I took a liking to the old guy and wrote down his name as maybe a 3rd or 4th Rounder.
Then I saw a 6'4" Left Hander 25 Years Old throwing off on the side with s Catcher.  He had plenty of pop in that fastball.  Yes a HOFer as well.  I thought he would be just what the Doctor ordered, to Pitch against all those 1920 Left Handed Bats. I briefly interrupted him to introduce myself and ask the young man if he would like to Pitch for my Team.  He said he would.  But I knew in my heart that this is probably wishful thinking on my part, as this young Pitcher is almost certain to be drafted by another Team before my 24th Pick arrives,
The 24 Year oid was Drafted and is Reggie Jackson.  The Left Handed Pitcher was Drafted and is Steve Carlton.  The other 30 Year Old Batter and 38 Year Old Right Handed Pitcher were not Drafted and are on outbacker's list.

I drafted Bob Gibson too early, but really wanted him.  I saw his last career win in 1975 and it just stuck with me.  Loved to watch him pitch the big games!
10/2/2011 7:40 PM
According to my Draft Board it wasn't to early to grab Gibson.  I also like the fact that Bob compliments Jim Palmer very nicely.

Bob Gibson is one of the Greatest Big Game Pitchers of Alltime... He doesn't get the Respect he deserves from the Wiz though... As a Cardinals fan from 1965 on to Present day... He was a delight to watch... He was the Most Feared Pitcher of his day, Willie Mays called him a Head hunter.. LOL... I was hart broken when Curt Flood slipped on a wet grass in the 7th game of the 1968 World Series, turning a sure Victory into Defeat... Flood catches that ball 99 out of 100 times... But that was the Beak the Tigers needed to Win the Series... The Tigers never should have Won that Series, because they were so over matched by Gibson... Espically after Gibson Striking out 17 batters in game 1 of the series which is still a Series Record... He then also Won game #4...He finished his Career 7-1 in World Series games... The cardinals were going for the repeat, because they beat the Red Sox in 1967... Gibson also won the World Seires in 1964 over the Yankees... His 1.12 ERA in 1968 will never ever be broken... He was the Greatest Pitcher of his day... well, it not the Greatest surely 1 of the Greatest for sure... Had he been avaible for my 3rd round pick... I would have Drafted 1 of my Childhood Idols, so NO... You Drafted him right on time... Good Job...

Didn't want to draft Torre this early, but with Manny being picked a few picks before, he was the last appealing C left for me.........And he has two pretty nasty seasons before becoming just average..
