Wow, 20 games over .500 and 22 games out of first - inconceivable!

What did the other divisions look like?

Only one other division was particularly weak (although every other division had two 100-game losers), and that was the other NL division, whose teams won 84, 75, 68, 61 and 51 games.

One other curiosity from this 1974 prog season.  One of the teams started out 23-4.  I took note of this because the team didn't seem that strong (below average in salary at the time).  At that point the owner decided, naturally enough, to go for a playoff spot; he pulled off a deal for a very good starting pitcher.  Now, I didn't expect the team to keep winning at an .852 clip even with this pitching boost, but I figured they'd at least stay in the thick of things after that trade.  Alas, no.  The team finished in 3rd with 84 wins, 18 games back of the division champ.  So after pulling off a deal to improve a 23-4 team ... they'd gone 61-74.

Believe It or Don't!
I've had exactly the opposite happen many times. I start off poor, trade off good players for picks, then start winning. Sometimes well enough to earn a playoff spot, other times just good enough to drop my draft position out of the top range. I've almost come to expect it.

I feel a little bad posting this but I will note that the other owner's team beat us 2 out of 3 in this early season series. But this box score is beyond belief.

Small sample size or not (I don't believe I said that.), but it has to qualify.  Through 35 games in an OL, in 13 games, including 6 starts, 88 Elton Chamberlain: 27 IP, 32 hits and a 5.27 ERA. 19 Gavvy Cravath: .510 Avg, .583 OBP, 1.059 slg. pct., and a 1.642 OPS in 51 ABs.

Oh, and 08 Christy Matthews: 11-1 with a 4.03 ERA.

This amazing streak by an amazingly bad pitcher continued through his first 7 starts of the season:  All 7 quality starts, 49.2 IP, 40 hits (.219), 13 BB, 1 HR, 3 wins, 0 losses, 1.45 ERA, 1.07 WHIP.  The team won 6 games, and in it could have been all 7 as Rhodes handed off a 2-1 lead in the 9th to Toney, who blew the save.

His true colors finally emerged starting with his 8th start. In 18 starts since the amazing streak, he's had 3 quality starts, 74.1 IP, 140 hits, 39 BB, 9 HR, 3 wins, 9 losses, 9.69 ERA, 2.41 WHIP.  Despite the horrible performances, the team's gone 8-10...
