*Pearl Jam plays*
Bill Simmons: Welcome to the Bill Simmons podcast sponsored by SeatGeek, tonight we’re doing “The Redraftables” and not just any Redraftables, we’re doing the classic 2003 Draft, one of the best drafts ever. And to my credit, I always knew that LeBron was going to be good.
House: you did know that
Bill: yeah I was a fan of his even before he ever played an NBA game. Possibly the greatest point guard ever. And what really makes him special is his ability to guard UP. He can even guard small forwards!
Ryen: He rebounds like a small forward too
Bill: well let’s not get ahead of ourselves here...
Okay so real quick: let’s go through what really happened in real life. Bron at 1. Darko at 2, which obviously is a bonehead move but you know the move that isn’t quite as bad but is almost as bad and never gets talked about? Melo at 3! I mean what were they thinking?! You don’t want that low of eFG% with that many points of usage!
Okay and then you have Bosh at 4 which actually was a good pick. People didn’t realize it at the time because the game was still being played old school, but he is a really good modern player. Classic small ball small forward!
House: yeah can you believe he was actually scouted as a PF/C?
Bill: Hang on House I’m still doing the thing. Okay then at 5 you have Wade. Solid pick. Nothing special but a few pretty good years. Kaman at 6...I think this was back when Pennsylvania still owned the Clippers, so no surprises there.
House: yeah that’s a really-
Bill: okay and then Hinrich at 7, I actually think he should’ve been top 5. All you have to do is just plan your whole team around that one year where he magically gets 33% better at defense and you’d be pretty good for that one season. He’s part of my
34-12-3400 club, there are only 2 members. House do you know who the other one is?
House: I don’t even know what that is
Bill: I just came up with it. The other member is DeJuan Blair.
Okay and then you have a bunch of guys who don’t matter, and a few who do like David West, Boris Diaw...
House: what like David West matters? He would never be a starter on any team except in his last season when he gets way better out of nowhere
Simmons: you know I’m still on David West Island
House: okay yeah me too
Bill: Alright we’re going to cut to break and be right back with who should have gone where.
