“3. Except, as an Italian American I have to tell you that " wop" really is an offensive word, the closest equivalent to the "n" word for Italians. It is short for "Without Official Papers" and suggests that our immigrant ancestors- my great-grandparents, whom I knew and loved, had no right to be in America.”

Both my parents were from Italy...it indeed was an offensive word...but we didn’t demand it be removed from the lexicon...

My only point was that pretty soon, if you said any of these offensive word, in any context, you would face some kind of reprimand by the government, culture, etc...Just another ***** in our armor...Oh geez, now the Chinese will be so offended by “*****” that they’ll spread another virus...

Irony re the N word is walking down the street (here in NYC at any rate) around 3pm and passing crowds of young school kids of color using the word (ends in "a", not "er") in every sentence. Also pretty prevalent in rap. They've actually co-opted the language and completely defused it of any derogatory sense. I don't know if this is a good thing or not, but I guess it's evolution. Meanwhile wop and **** have pretty much disappeared from use (out in the open anyway; behind closed doors who knows).

I guess one's background helps determine what offends you the most.

"I guess one's background helps determine what offends you the most."

Or how sensitive one is to PERCEIVED insult and quick to take offense..............

There's folks who'll "eternally damn" you because you won't endorse their theology and yet folks are all hot over some sports franchise calling themselves the "Indians"??? Who's upset? What tribes find it offensive? How many find it an honor? What about the Atlanta Braves, (of course!) or better yet, The Golden State Warriors? Anyone calling that offensive? And if not, why not? How is it different than Braves or Indians. The nicknames chosen by teams are SUPPOSED to represent grit, toughness, ferocity, RESPECT. Like Bears, Lions, Tigers, Eagles, etc.

Some retired Texas Ranger ought to take offense at HOW they're being portrayed (at least) most years.

The whole thing is ridiculously PC.

You can't even have a lovely shaped Mountain peak called Molly's Nipple anymore...................

Some WOMAN (or wannabe) will likely take offense...............prolly named Karen.

Seriously though...........How many teams are there around with the nickname The Apaches?

I know there are some.
I ask you why?
And I submit it's because of either Pride (in the case of schools of various Apache Communities) or Respect for their fierceness, honor and worthiness as an opponent.

WHY should anyone take offense to that??
Especially a non Indian!

As an old fat white guy, I guess I have less rites than these other people because I can’t use words(n-word) that they use...

I have to leave now and go to the store to buy some cleaner...I guess I won’t find “**** and Span” anymore....Prices are kinda high though, maybe I’ll wait till Black Friday comes around so I can get some bargains...Sorry, I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings...I meant to say “Mauve Friday”...
