The evening games are in on this Independence Day. The most impactful game came out of Group C where FC Trojans of SC was in a do or die situation against group leader Metropolitan Screaming Eagles. Four different Trojans put the ball in the back of the net, which more than offset the solo scoring effort by Metro Eagles forward Filip Lonnqvist, who scored twice. The problem with the Trojans win was that the 4-2 score probably wasn't enough to save the club from elimination. As it stands, the Trojans and Burnaby Hillbillies are tied with 10 points. However, the Hillbillies hold the tiebreaker by a +5 goal differential and have won the 2nd tiebreaker (away goals,) meaning that The Trojans need Burnaby to lose by 6 goals to last place Arsenal F.C. It's not impossible, but Burnaby would need to break form in a big way to drop the final game by that large a margin...although some crazy things have happened in previous Cups.
Swamp City Dragons went from third to first based on its 5-0 clubbing of Fianna AFC in Group F action. De Vante Greer scored the last two goals to put the game away in the 2nd half. You can throw a blanket over the top three teams as they are separated by only two points, although Swamp City, which has a game in hand, is in control of its own destiny.
The defending Champs Rushmore FC drew their third game in a row and now sit at a very unusual 0-0-3. The game against SwampDragons United was as statistically even as a 1-1 tie would suggest, as neither team established themselves offensively. It was also the third straight tie in Group A, as the standings are becoming a bit messy below kangaroo fc, who is beginning to look like the group favorite. As low scoring as all of these games have been, Group A is looking like a Group of Death.
To round out the day, Der Kaiserlich-Österreichische Hodensack beat Fußball-Club Köln 01/07 e. V. 1-0 in front of 23,954 bored stiff fans in Vienna, Austria. The Balls (Hodensack is German for gonads) scored their first goal of the tournament when Yale Guzman beat the offside trap and notched the most meaningful tally if his young professional career. The result shouldn't impact the Group H transfer spots as there is still a whopping 12 goal differential between the Austrians and the top two clubs.
