If a shoplifter with a kid in tow comes in and is caught. Are they separated from the kid?

bad luck?
No. You don’t usually get arrested for shoplifting. You get a ticket.

If the value of the merchandise is less than $500, the offense is a Class A misdemeanor, which carries with it a maximum of nine months in jail. The offense is a Class I felony if the value of the merchandise exceeds $500 but does not exceed $5,000, and this means as much as three years and six months in jail.

It depends on the amount...Not so simple.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the family separation fiasco about people seeking asylum?
It was about them crossing illegally.

There is no path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
100% there is for their kids. And then there is this:

In San Francisco, immigrants who are in the country illegally are now eligible to register and vote in school board elections. Of course, this is clearly illegal under the California Constitution.

Article II, Section 2 of the California Constitution says: “A United States citizen 18 years of age and resident in this State may vote.”

Kids who are born here. Not the kids hey bring with them. If it’s illegal, it will be challenged and stopped. Thanks for proving that this isn’t about votes.
Kids that are born here correct. Dems have been doing this for 50 years. Duh. Once they have majority they can do as they wish including giving citizenship paths to illegals, etc. Are you really this stupid? Never mind, I know the answer.

Maybe you should go back and debate tec, you're getting killed here, little man.
People born here are citizens, not illegal immigrants.
Yep. Plan A. And Plan B. is to legalize those that are illegal. Dems being Dems.
Yeah, you don't get to assign malicious intent to something that isn't happening. The dems had control. They never gave illegals the right to vote.

Jesus, the point wasn't to argue about the technicalities of shoplifting. It was to point out that, despite the fact that harsh and cruel punishments will deter minor crimes, we don't hand out unusually harsh and cruel punishments for minor crimes.

I know. When you seek asylum and are denied and still cross that is illegal.

The matter is obviously complex. How would you fix it?

Singapore does. Works well for them.

Here is the problem. Illegal crossings considered minor by some and not so by others. So Congress needs to step up. We all agree that border security is important and what we have currently is not working well enough. When a POTUS wins an election on an issue such as this, in my view it can no longer be considered minor.

Did you know that Jews killed Jesus?

Is it possible to both deal with the border security issue and not cruelly separate babies, toddlers, and other small children, sometimes permanently, from their parents?

(hint: the answer is yes)

In my opinion, yes. I think we need to treat it as a serious problem and deter future crossings. You have yet to come up with a solution like my 12 year old, you're first to criticize but don't have an alternative. Fortunately she is learning that when you complain you need to have an alternative solution that you recommend. Maybe you'll figure it out too.

You don't want arrests. You don't want the wall. You don't want status quo? What is it you do want? Just to complain?

So you think we can deal with the border without separating children from parents. Then why are you arguing?
8/21/2018 3:44 PM
I think we can but we have yet to find a better solution. Can and will are not the same. Until a better solution is found I am all for this. You don't have a better solution either.

Hint: It is because you are an idiot who complains a lot.
8/21/2018 3:49 PM
This isn't a solution. It's just a cruel punishment. And that's why it was stopped.

It was stopped because people like you whined and it likely served its purpose in terms of deterring people from just waltzing in here. Again, you don't have a solution. Just complaints. You're like the male version of Kamala Harris. Maybe you even identify as her.
8/21/2018 3:59 PM
It likely didn’t do anything to deter anyone. So it was both cruel and useless.
