My opinion since neither Bruin or Habs fan is what Chara did deserves a large portion suspension.  What would the NHL do if it was Crosby who was lined out from Chara.  Then Chara would be banned from the NHL or something.  Chara put down the late hit and deserves a suspension.  How long the suspension is in up in the air.  Though, if he does not get any suspension than the NHL is a joke and protects the star players.  That's my take on it and feel bad for any player who goes down like that.  Checking is fine but this was not just finishing your check it was nasty play.  The sad thing is nobody on the Habs even took him on.  Hell, who cares about size when your team-mate is lying their all scrambled like.  I will never understand when team-mates don't stick up for one another.

After having seen the replay at least 2 dozen times (it's all they're talking about here in mtl), I gotta say I'm changing my tune a little. There are a couple of factors to consider here:

1. It was a late hit, which suggests Chara wanted to physically punish Pacioretty and send a message for the next game. I do not believe however that Chara intended to break the kid's neck.

2. The history of the teams and two players involved enables us to draw some comparisons to the Bertuzzi-Moore incident, where one player tries to send a message without necessarily "intending" to injure the other. In this case, the result much more than the intent should be penalized.

Having said that, I believe the proper reaction by the NHL is to suspend Chara for the remainder of the season plus the first round of the playoffs. unfortunately for everyone but the B's and Chara, I think the NHL is likely to give him 2-3 games and a financial slap on the proverbial wrist because they have no balls.

As for the Habs going after Chara, trust me when you see a teammate down not moving, the last thing on your mind is retribution.

Max should have looked where he was god damn going.

I am probably the only person in North America saying this, but the damn game has gotten too fast.  Players are skating out of control.  "We" take pride in these guys being machines, TRAINING like freaks, taking pride in how the are such superior MACHINES to the players of the past... well I never saw guys getting BLOWN THE F UP every third game when I was a kid.

The game would be a lot safer if people just SLOWED DOWN and played under control, but that's not the culture "WE" want, is it?  No, we glorify that whole "40 Seconds" thing, MAX OUT YOUR V02 and BEAT YOUR MAN TO THAT PUCK...

No worry that you're trying to get around him on the outside and there's a pole in your face.

Nope, I'm standing squarely in the LOOK WHERE YOU'RE DAMN WELL GOING camp.

yeah nevermind the fact chara hit pac`s skate with his stick to put him off balance to start with...watch the WHOLE video with the sound of dumbasses off....he didnt have a choice on where he was going.

and yes... the game is too fast for chara

I think Chara intended to hurt Max, but only enough to have him not be a threat in these playoffs.
I don`t think he intended to hurt him enough to possibly end his career, or even prevent him from playing at all till next season.

Chara knew about the arena's boards...he`s a very experienced and knowledgeable defenceman.
If you look closely, many times, he went and purposely timed himself to push Max into that weak boards section AND then did the extra bit of shoving and twisting Max`s head into it.

* THE FASCINATING THING IS:
- this `coincidentally` came IMMEDIATELY after the Boston Bruins' head coach called a time-out, when the Habs were embarrassing them 4-0, with a lot of time yet to play in the game.
(their coach isn`t stupid...foolish yes, but not stupid...Max is the Habs ONLY good offensive weapon...till now at least, so the Habs will have a tough time in the playoffs without him, if no one else steps up, which hasn`t happened yet this season)

Ummm, if I remember correctly, I think Gomez took him on.

And thanks for coming to the defence of your greatest rival!
(now I think I will move the Laffs up to my 28th favourite NHL team, with Boston falling way down from the middle of the pack to 29th;)

Seriously.

So I have one of you contending that the game is "too fast for Chara"... and another one of you saying that within 2.5 seconds Chara can see exactly who's coming down the ice, evaluate the state of playoff seeding, decide to implement instructions from his superior, consider exactly what degree to which maim the guy, and calculate the perfect trajectory to launch his noggin into a pipe moving past at a high rate of speed.

Complicated business.

I also can't get past the viewpoint that "Chara knew exactly what he was doing."  Aside from blatant homerism.

I fully expect that players lose their minds in a second or two.  That's why the league looks for prior behaviour.  Guys with a pattern of losing their minds.  These guys are all backwoods hulks from Northern Ontario or Lower Slobovia who never finished high school, and they've been gifted with a lifetime of athletic entitlement.  I don't expect them to be the most sophisticated citizens.

But let's be clear, I would not have been surprised at all to wake up today and find on the news that Pacioretty had died.

In which case, if Chara is a guy who, if there are guys in the league who, go out there at practice, scout the rink, and look for spots in which, hey yeah, I can crush a dude's brain right there... that's premeditated murder.  Do I think there are murderers in the league, in the sport?  No.

If you do, why then is this a sport which you continue to follow?

I will clarify for myself regarding Chara knowing what he was doing.
My clarification is in my above post.

I will add, that by "knowing" what one is doing does not always mean that one EMOTIONALLY and MENTALLY and PHYSICALLY knows what they are doing.
It IS possible to fully know 1 of the 3 and be clueless on the other 2.

yeah i guess it wasnt as bad as avery`s sloppy seconds comment....or wiz`s blow job motion to the aforementioned
