I think WIS defines contact as directly affecting the batter's vl and vr. So, I look at it as a multiplier to those ratings.
If WiS understood their engine, patrickm wouldn't suck so bad.
If murph ever had any evidence to back up his beliefs instead of randomly interpreting something and spewing it as fact, he wouldn't suck so bad.

It's a high contract for someone who doesn't do one thing particularly well. He'll solidify the back of rlahann's lineup, but that's it. In the meantime bret can get a little pitching help and flexibility in future seasons.
Defense, *****. He's a five position talent bump in that regard.  Current SS improves third, third improves 2B, 2B moves to left field where he belongs, and left moves to and improves first. Current 1B vs. new SS is a marginal difference offensively.
He's going to make your team better, but that doesn't make him an exceptional defender. I'm just saying you can get a better defender for half the price if you're looking for just defense. And you can get an adequate defender with a better bat for the same price. You took the middle ground, which is still fine in my book, but it's just a lot of money for someone who isn't stellar in any capacity.

Is this about how he says his wife isn't fat?

Yeah, the list of all of you that I'd ever be all that interested in meeting isn't exceptionally long, but bret2775 is on it.
crap, do you want to punch me in the face like nuge does?  If so, I'll pass.
Who ever said I wanted to punch you in the face?  I'm a fan of yours bret.
you just want my extra chromosome, admit it!
Mocking you and hating you are two different things.

the rps bret got arent bad. I like the first one, a lot. Not a bad move.
He was initially just going to get the second one.
In hindsight, I think Bret just Bretted up the TC rather than Roarked it up...glad he was going to go through with it anyway, but tossing dude in was probably the right thing to do.
I know he emailed at least me with the "Would I get made fun of if I traded Johnstone and $5m for Plesac?" I said ask for someone else, and recommended another pitcher.

Wait, the SS has mid 80's across the board.  he is a very good SS.  His contact and power numbers arent great but are mitigated by the fact that he has high splits and a great BE.  Maybe the 7.5 is a touch high but he is not a minimum player.

There's a real dearth of ML SS in S1 right now...I went through them all, and this dude, despite his flaws, is deep into the top half...in that rung below Mercedes, G-MAC, etc.

I'm not saying he's minimum. I'm just saying he's pricey for a compromise. I see his value, and I think that he'll do well as an 8 or 9 hitter in San Antonio. I'm just saying there are cheaper guys who are better defenders and guys paid equally who are better hitters.  Johnstone is a compromise between the two. I'd just prefer him making $1.5m or so less.

Can we start talking about just how early bret picked Johnstone?
7/28/2010 12:08 PM
That was a rape of bret. Those two pitchers are garbage. The actual pitches for Plesac are too bad for him to be above average. The other pitcher has terrible control. The SS isn't great, but I'd rate him as average. His value for San Antonio is skewed as getting on base via walks will lead to more ABs for the actually good hitters.

There aren't a lot of guys who can field and hit. He can kind of do both, and won't kill you in any regard. He might have been able to get bret someone better in return with some solicitation, even.  I think it's a good  deal for both sides. I just don't want anyone thinking this was all that lopsided just because of an overall rating.

You signed him to a long-term deal in his first year of arbitration?

I didn't look at overall and it is lopsided.  You have to back it up since you are brets mentor.  bret got raped while you were babysitting him.

The SS is good, but I wouldn't want to pay him over $6-7M/year unless I was carrying a $100M payroll.   Which BLE is.
At least 1 pitcher will deserve to make the majors which means he will be worth his salary for a while.  The Bret mistake is not the trade, it is the huge contract he will give one or both of the pitchers in a few seasons.
