On Gomez, he seems very streaky at the plate, no patience at all, does not seem to take to coaching very well. Talks a good game but swings at basically anything and does not take advantage of his speed. Certainly does not get on base often enough to bat second. Perhaps he would benefit from more consistent playing time but Macha is on the last year of his contract, no doubt feeling pressure to win, and Edmonds is stealing time from him, particularly against what Macha would call "tough" right-handed pitchers.
He has a reputation as some kind of defensive prodigy but I haven't been real impressed with that part of his game either. Great arm, but seems to take bad angles more often than I would expect and as a result has played some singles into doubles or doubles into triples.
