I actually think they should be shipping JON + Bradley + Pavs + 2 picks for Varejao and Anthony Parker.

Rondo/Allen/Pierce/Garnett/Varejao would be an elite starting 5, absolutely would have a shot at the title.
That team wouldn't beat the Heat and would be in much worse shape next summer by wasting its cap space on Andy and getting rid of two firsts in a potentially very deep draft.  Sure the team would be better this year, but it isn't going to win the title with that roster, so what is the point of the trade?

i dunno, i think ainge might be too gay about his cap space and late 1sts to pursue it.
Well, I just got Varejao in an auction draft for $6.  So it would be really cool if Ainge traded for him and built the offense around him.

Varejao

wow is that the scent of desperation?

we'd be dogs against the heat, but we'd have a much better chance of beating them.

varejao's a good use of cap room

2 late firsts isn't a huge sacrifice

why wouldn't the celtics want to upgrade the weak link in their starting lineup with a v good role player?

FWIW everybody thinks the Celtics were too old last year, but that's not true.  They were +12.8 per 48 with their big 4 on the court, the problem was players #5-9.

There's hope for an upgrade w'/ Bass and Dooling looking OK, then we just need one of Quisy/Pietrus and one of Wilcox/Stiemsma to play OK enough for the bench to work.

Other than that, upgrading JON to a player of AV's caliber helps the 1st unit withstand any aging and possibly even get better in spite of it.  Sorry but that trade would make Boston a legit contender, even if they still face an uphill battle it's worth it imo.  There's plenty of time to build on late 1st rounders starting in 2013.

it's not that they wouldnt want that but the phrase 'elite starting 5' was bandied about which is a little heady

alot like Lakers fans using the same phrase if we added Ramon Sessions or Luke Ridnour (ok maybe not quite but it's in the same spirit)

Well the Lakers would arguably have the best starting 5 in the West with a Sessions or Ridnour.  You're already up there with Kobe/Bynum/Gasol + rags (OKC sets themselves apart with depth, their 1st unit was not great last year), so if you upgrade your weakest position to somebody serviceable it def helps.  Same thing goes for the Celtics, except they'd be getting a slightly above avg starter to upgrade their drek, so it's a bigger impact.

Unfortunately I agree w/ deano on AV.   Perfect fit.  Otherwise you risk throwing in the towel on the season.

Wow there are a lot of guys "stuck" out of the country this year.  JR Smith maybe the most notable.  Not a bright move by him, but that's not surprising.

Wilson Chandler as well.

they should throw in the towel on the season.  I really can't see them getting past the first or second round (at best), which is a lost season and a waste of great expiring contracts.

I don't understand what you think the Celtics will get for any of their expiring contracts. They're lined up to make an attempt to win this season, then make a play in free agency in the offseason.

draft picks and/or young players.  No superstars or anything, but hopefully some players that might develop into starter or better level players at some point.

No one truly good wants to come to Boston given its current position.  The cap space is going to go unused or used on players like Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva like Detroit did a few years back because that is all that is going to come to Boston.  The Celtics have to get their next superstar in the draft or by using the draft to get the pieces to trade for him (like with Allen and KG).  The upcoming draft is very deep, so the more picks Boston can get in it the better.

Cs should draft a marathon runner then give his heart to Jeff Green.
