Here, we beat a slow-down team by being more efficient than they (I kind of hate myself for knowing/using the correct grammar in this case, but I was an English major in college. and it rears up from time to time).

This seasons Collegiate Sports Writers Association selection for National Coach of the Year goes to colorblind79 who led Maryland to a record of 28-3. This is the 4th National COY Award for colorblind79.

Once again, I was not the conference CoY.

Our next opponent, our border rival, the West Virginia Mountaineers, a 12th seed that upset the 4th seed:

Anyways, obviously we have more talent than they do, and don't even have a significant speed disadvantage at the guard spots.  That doesn't guarantee a win, but it certainly helps the odds.

Incidentally, the ACC has 5 teams in the Sweet Sixteen.  The Big 12, which brought 9 teams to the NT (to our 8), has 2.

We easily handle a less talented team.

Of the Elite 8, four are from the ACC: UMD, BC, UNC, and GT.  My conference mates swept the Pac10 out of the NT in this last round.

Our next opponent, 2 seed Ohio State:

They go 10 deep, so it's not like having those two walk-ons really matters.  I think we have a slight talent edge but it's not exactly a gap.  We'll see what happens.  The Elite 8 is elite for a reason.

UCLA is still in the Pac-10. We will avenge the insult!

Nice season to you and to the ACC.

----------

Oops, I got confused...UNC played another Big East team in Georgetown (and happily for UMD and the ACC, won in an upset).  We had 5 teams in the Sweet Sixteen, and now 4 in the Elite Eight.  I didn't notice that VT had lost.

With that said, UCLA has outstanding talent this year.  If we see them, it'll be a tough matchup.  First we've got to make it through this next game against the Buckeyes, though - and they'd have to take out LSU, another excellent team.

I think the odds are slightly against us, here, because they have guards that I'm pretty sure we'll be unable to defend against, due to a speed differential.  Thompson isn't that fast but he's a great shooter (I think Harmon could put up the same sort of stats that Thompson has, but for some reason has not done so).  The one positive is that they're running the triangle, which de-emphasizes speed and agility to some degree.

I really hope we win, this Maryland team is the most talented I think I've had, and this year is our best chance for a championship for a while.  If we lose in the Final Four, no matter how good the season was, it's not a championship.

Incidentally, BC lost to Texas, and UNC beat GT to reach the Final Four.

I thought that even if we lost, it would be a close game.  Oh well.  We still made the Final Four, which is pretty good.  Championships are hard to get...colorblind79 now has 66 DI NT wins (the third highest total in Crum) and only one championship.

UNC lost too.  The ACC had a total of 24 NT games and 4 PIT games.  I think that means we'll have a lot of recruiting cash.

Coach, that was a tough matchup for us. The team did the best they could and we just came up short. We still had a dream season, only 4 teams made it this far.

#10 SF, #52 Overall, ****; promised 10 minutes.  At the last minute before signing, Syracuse came in and tried to steal away both of our recruits.  Now, all's fair in recruiting, but I feel like he did that out of spite after going all ghost-ship for the last few seasons (possibly started by us beating him for a recruit, and I think that might've been Jesse Besaw).

Anyways, here we have a player with decent potential, but who is somewhat limited in terms of speed.  He could be a pro, depending on just how high his potential is in the High areas.  That passing Low shouldn't be too much of an issue for an SF.
Nocera started off kind of mediocre, and progressed to a valuable reserve, then a decent starter, then a star.  Four year players like this are really great for programs to have, even if they don't set the world on fire right away.

#15 PF, #69 Overall, ****; no promises.  Here we have a developmental recruit who would be well served by a year as a redshirt (but I'm not expecting him to agree to that).  He can't see the floor just yet with his rebounding and defense what it is, and he'll never be a great offensive threat.  However, the high potential in perimeter and ballhandling, and the high base value in passing, make him an interesting SF/PF hybrid.  Murphy could be a real contributor, but I expect him to stay mostly in the background.
Murphy stayed in the background to such an extent that he threatened to transfer a few times a year, but didn't.  In the meantime, he provided valuable minutes and was an efficient presence on the floor.  He'll be relatively easy to replace, but he did contribute to some good teams, and none more than this year's version.

#1 SG, #2 Overall, *****; no promises.  Harmon doesn't have quite the potential I would've liked (high on speed...heh; average on athleticism, high on ballhandling and passing to go with the perimeter, and definitely high on stamina), but he's already a pretty decent SG/SF hybrid player.  We need him at the SG spot so that's where he'll play for at least two years.  The NBA is certainly a possibility, but unfortunately he isn't quite as awesome as his hype.

Also, as a Baltimore resident, I find it hilarious that he starred for the Talmudical Academy.
Harmon never starred, in spite of his considerable ability.  He's declared after a decent junior year.  He would've been helpful for next year, but he's not the only guy leaving...

32. Indiana Pacers Robert Harmon 6'3", 195

I think Harmon might have gotten drafted in the lottery next year if he'd stuck around, but maybe not.  He was never going to be fast enough for the position in the pros, and never big enough to be an SF in the pros (though, of course, they don't seem to consider those factors in drafts in this simulation).  I wish he'd stayed.

#5 PF, #14 Overall, *****; no promises.  Jennings is a good, dynamic PF with a lot to offer.  I don't mind that his shot blocking potential is low, considering all of the other areas he can improve.  I think he'll be a star for us and leave for the NBA at some point, possibly early.
I haven't had a lot of 1000 rated players, but Jennings is one of them.  He was a key player for a very good team, one of a trio of guys who averaged in double digit scoring.  He'll be really tough to replace any time soon, but there's a local guy I'll be targeting for the slot.

#9 C, #35 Overall, *****; no promises.  Henderson is my least favorite recruit for the year, simply due to his speed.  With that said, he should be fine in the C spot and is a likely 4 year player, which isn't bad at all considering he's a five-star guy.  He doesn't have any areas of real weakness other than the speed thing, though his FT% won't be great.
It would've been nice if Henderson had been the 4-year player I had expected him to be.  Whatever, he's pretty polished at this point so it's not like I'm shocked by the departure.  He may be tough to replace with a recruit in the short term, but we do have Crispin so we're not missing a starter, next year.

I'm not sure how much better Henderson would've gotten with another year, but I'm pretty sure he would have made the first round, considering he was one pick away here.  I think he would have enjoyed being a senior and having a guaranteed contract, in hindsight.

#28 SG, #150 Overall, *; promised no redshirt.  The reason we were on Mark Biel in the first place was that we had about $30k left after wrapping up Maloof, but there simply weren't many decent unsigned players left.  Tulsa had five guys considering them for one or two spots, and Biel was one of them - I scouted every state that had more than 30 unsigned players left in it.  Biel had decent potential, so I figured I'd throw my extra money at him and see if we could get him as a redshirt.  After Biel turned down the redshirt (and the scholarship that went with it), I went back and forth on whether to offer him a scholarship.  Ultimately I figured there's a chance that we don't have any early entries this year, in which case we'd be trying to recruit for one spot with the funding for one spot, plus whatever the conference brings in in the postseason.  Alternately, if we had him, all of that postseason cash would bleed over at 100% to the next season, which would be a big advantage.  I figured we could use a 4 year depth SG/SF, and that he'd probably transfer if none of our guards leave early anyways.  It was a calculated risk.  UConn signed a point guard I would have very highly preferred.

According to his evaluations, Biel has very high potential in perimeter and ballhandling, but only normal high on passing, so he'll probably be a designated jumpshooter after he matures a bit.
Biel transferred.  That's fine.  We really didn't need him, though I guess he'd be okay to have, also.  I wonder where he'll land.

Analysis:

well, we lost 5 NBA players and a depth guy, so obviously we're hurting currently and need to really work on the recruiting trail in order to field a good team.  Batiste would not normally be a starting quality player for the Terps, but he may have to be pressed in to the role.

#4 SG, #9 Overall, *****; guaranteed 10 minutes.  In George Gerome, we have a hybrid SG/SF who should be a fine defender and adequate everywhere else.  After seeing that we were in a few battles, Georgetown attempted to take Gerome from us.  While they failed in that regard, it did damage my ability to haul in some other players, so we're probably going to wind up with 3 signings instead of the 6 we were pursuing.  On the plus side, we won't have any stiffs.   There will be a few guys who'll be providing depth in different roles, though.  Gerome will be one of them.  He'll grow into a starter/contributor but that low potential in speed is troubling.

#14 C, #45 Overall, ****; no promises.  Kyle Ladd is a developmental prospect who will either be a quality depth guy for 4 years (I hope) or a fine starter.  This will depend on just how high that potential is in defense.  Worst case scenario, he'll be a mild liability in the long run.  Best case, he'll be a great help on both ends of the floor.  I'm not terribly bothered by his low post rating/potential...it's better than some role playing seniors I've had in the past.  For now, he'll be eating some minutes and improving.  Ladd was the sole player I got unchallenged.
