Game 67: Montreal snaps their skid with an all-around effort as seven different players drive in a run and Jeremy Bonderman pitches six strong innings in an 8-1 win over St. Louis. Bonderman improves to 4-5.

Game 68: Jimmy Gobble throws five shutout innings and the Spectres beat St. Louis 3-0.

Game 69: Jacque Jones' grand slam highlights a five-run fourth inning as the Cthulu avoid a sweep with a 5-3 win over the Spectres.

Houston visits Montreal next.

Game 70: Mark Bellhorn doubles and homers to pace the Spectre offense, and Kelvim Escobar strikes out 12 in a complete game 7-1 victory, improving to 10-2 on the season.

Game 71: Houston puts up a 4-spot in the fifth and holds on for a 5-3 win over the Spectres.

Game 72: Montreal strands a ton of runners (especially 0-6 Geoff Jenkins), blows a late lead, and finally loses it in 11, 8-7, giving Houston a series win.

The Spectres head to Cincy hoping for some better luck.

Game 73: Melvin Mora hits two home runs and a double, driving in five runs, allowing the Spectres to overcome a 15-9 deficit in the hit column to beat the Stingers 8-5. The resurgent Jimmy Gobble goes five innings and moves above .500 for the season with his fifth victory.

Game 74: Jorge Piedra drives in five runs and the Spectres get five scoreless innings from the bullpen as they beat the Stingers 12-3.

Game 75: John Buck's grand slam caps an eight-run eighth inning as the Stingers rally for a 10-5 win to avoid a sweep at Montreal's hands. Jim Brower and Salomon Torres face six batters between them in the fateful frame, and five of them score.

The Spectres will host San Diego next.

Game 76: Montreal gets 15 hits, 10 of them in a nine-run sixth inning, and topples the Conquistadors 9-5 in the series opener.

Game 77: San Diego scores four times in the first, but the Spectres respond with seven in the second inning. Melvin Mora drives in six runs for the game and Montreal wins 11-5. Jeremy Bonderman pitches poorly but picks up the win to even his record at 5-5.

Game 78: Ken Griffey Jr. has four hits and scores the winning run in the 10th inning on Angel Berroa's single the Spectres beat San Diego in 10 innings, 5-4.

The Spectres head to Los Angeles to face the Looters and finish out the first half of the season.

Game 79: Edgardo Alfonzo's three-run homer is all the offense Montreal can muster, and the Spectres allow four unearned runs late to seal the deal as they drop the series opener in LA, 9-3.

Game 80: Montreal bounces back with a 4-3 win behind Kelvim Escobar (now 11-2), scoring four runs in the third inning on a double by Edgardo Alfonzo and a home run by Carlos Delgado.

Game 81: Melvin Mora has another 5-RBI game and Jake Westbrook throws a complete game 2-hitter as Montreal finishes the first half with a 12-0 win at Dodger Stadium.

Montreal is 50-31, 12 games in front of Pittsburgh.

Montreal places six players on the 2004 NL All Star Team:

Pitchers : Kelvim Escobar, Jake Westbrook, Eddie Guardado

Third Base : Melvin Mora

Outfield: Carl Crawford, Geoff Jenkins



The Spectres will host Milwaukee (52-29) to start the second half.

Game 82: Montreal builds a big early lead against Carlos Silva and Darren Dreifort, then barely holds on for a 10-9 victory as the Gray Bears rally for six runs over the final three innings. Jim Brower gives up consecutive run-scoring singles in the ninth but then retires the next two batters to notch his second save. Mark Bellhorn hits two home runs from the leadoff spot.

Game 83: Jamie Moyer makes two mistakes, but each costs him one run only, and the Gray Bears even the series with a 4-2 win.

Game 84: Joe Kennedy limits the powerful Gray Bear offense to one run and two hits over six innings as the Spectres claim the series with a 5-1 win.

Interleague sets with St. Paul, Washington, and Chicago are next on the schedule.

Game 85: St. Paul's Roy Oswalt throws a complete game shutout, allowing only seven singles, as the Sarlaacs beat Kelvim Escobar 3-0.

Game 86: Melvin Mora has six hits and Carl Crawford adds four more as the Spectres even things up with St. Paul, winning 11-5 on the road.

Game 87: Washington has a five-run 4th inning and piles on three more runs in the next two frames as the Spectres drop an 8-4 decision.

Game 88: Jimmy Gobble's recent stretch of good outings comes to a crashing halt, with some help (or lack thereof) from the defense, as Washington scores seven times in the second inning and holds on for a 7-6 win to sweep the Spectres.

Game 89: The Spectres continue to struggle against the AL, losing a 6-5 decision at Chicago. The White Sox score four in the first off Joe Kennedy and hold on through a late Montreal rally; Ramon Hernandez ends the game by grounding out with runners at the corners.

Game 90: Montreal trails the White Sox 8-4 with two outs and none on in the bottom of the ninth when lightning strikes. Double-single-single-single-single-walk chases Braden Looper and makes it 8-7, bases loaded. Ron Villone enters. Carl Crawford greets him with a game-tying single. Edgardo Alfonzo follows with another hit. Spectres win!

With that little bit of magic in our pockets, we head to Wrigley.

Game 91: The Spectres get five RBI from their 7-8 hitters and hold off a furious Bootlegger rally to win the opener at Wrigley, 8-7. Chicago scores two each in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, falling just short.

Game 92: Salomon Torres and Jason Frasor each surrender a three-run homer as the Bootleggers score a bunch of runs late to turn a close contest into an 11-5 laugher at Wrigley.

Game 93: Jimmy Gobble throws seven 2-hit innings and the Spectres take the series with a 6-2 win. Gobble evens his record at 6-6.

Montreal heads to Houston to face the Lone Stars.

Game 94: The Spectres have trouble coming up with the key hit and drop the opener in Houston to Jose Acevedo, 4-2.

Game 95: Montreal gets two solo home runs and nothing else; meanwhile Houston scores four in the eighth off an ineffective Spectre bullpen to pull away with a 7-2 win.

Game 96: Montreal gets 14 hits but is swept by Houston, losing the series finale 9-7.

The Spectres return home to face St. Louis.

Game 97: Melvin Mora hits two home runs and a double as the Spectres get their offense back on track with an 11-5 win over the Cthulu. Jeremy Bonderman gets the win, improving his record to 7-6.

Game 98: Jimmy Gobble pitches into the sixth and Carlos Delgado drives in three runs as the Spectres beat St. Louis 7-2.

Game 99: St. Louis gets a solid outing from Jason Marquis and a four-out save from Trevor Hoffman to salvage the series finale, beating Montreal 4-3.

Montreal travels west to face the hated 69ers.

Game 100: Michael Cuddyer drives in four runs and the Spectres draw seven walks to go with 10 hits as they beat the Niners 10-8, holding off a late rally by Frisco.

Game 101: Montreal gets 12 hits but no walks in this one, and the Niners even the series with a 6-3 win.

Game 102: Khalil Greene homers, triples, and reaches base four times, and the Spectres score four runs over the final three innings to take the series with a comeback 5-3 win over Frisco.

Montreal will host Cincinnati next.

Game 103: Joge Piedra and Carl Crawford drive in two runs each and Jimmy Gobble has another effective outing as the Spectres win the opener, 5-1.

Game 104: Ramon Hernandez drives in five runs with two doubles and the Spectres score five times in the eighth to turn a 6-5 nail-biter into an 11-5 laugher.

Game 105: Kelvim Escobar strikes out 11 batters in eight innings to pick up his 13th win, 7-1, to complete a Spectre sweep of the Stingers.

Montreal heads to San Diego to face the Conquistadors.

Game 106: Geoff Jenkins triples and homers, driving in five runs, and Carl Crawford has four hits as the Spectres help Jake Westbrook match Kelvim Escobar with his 13th victory, 8-4 over San Diego.

Game 107: A blown save by Eddie Guardado, his sixth of the season, isn't fatal as the Spectres score three times in the 12th and hold San Diego scoreless in the bottom half for a 6-3 win. Jorge Piedra drives in the winner with a two-run double.

Game 108: San Diego scores five in the second off Jimmy Gobble, then rallies from a 7-6 deficit with three in the seventh (on a bases-loaded double by Dustin Mohr) as they take the finale 9-7. Chris Reitsma gets his first win of the season (against nine losses) in relief for the Conquistadors.

The Spectres head home from the West Coast to face LA. Makes sense, no?
