Total ED budget in 1980 was about 14 bil...2009 budget was 64 bil.

That is about 470%.

When you are a department you fight for more money.

And that doesnt include the 100 billion that was just given to them in Obama's stimulus. If anyone can explain how that stiumulates the economy I would like to hear it.

14 bil in 1980 translates to around 39 bil today with inflation.  The stimulus isn't the topic and it isn't part of the ED budget.

Rolling ED into HHS does nothing of significance.

So 39 to 64 isnt 30%.

And how are you adjusting for inflation? 14 becomes 39 over 30 years? That is almost 9% annually. Inflation is far below that!

Are you sure about any of this?

64 bil was the requested amount in the President's Budget.  The actual amount was 32 bil.  There are several inflation calculators on the net.

Not true...Race to the Top (4 billion) was funded by the stimulus act and administered by the DoE.

Your math is wrong...14 to 39 over 30 years isn't a 9% inflation rate...it's much less.  I'm not going to figure out the math, but a 9% inflation rate on 14 over 30 years has to be at least like 70?

Ok, I was way off...a 9% inflation rate would put it at 185 after 30 years.

Actually, I take it back...I see your point.  That had nothing to do with the DoE budget.

my math was wrong. forgot to compound.

And why isnt the 100 bil from the stimulus counted? You are counting a drop in budget this year that might be impacted by the huge amount of funding.
9/2/2010 3:26 AM
Because it wasn't "IN THE BUDGET."  It wasn't something requested by the DOE...that came from DOE coffers.  It's a small point, but I think it matters for whatever you two are arguing about.

The budget for ED didn't drop in 2010, it increased.

You still haven't given a valid argument for merging ED into HHS.  You wanna keep trying or do you just want to move on to privatized education, which I assume is what you really want?
9/2/2010 9:59 AM
Ah yes! Lets privatize it and then we can build in all that profit and CEO bonuses! Wow, how much more do you think that will cost?

So it wasnt requested? The President gave the money to ED without a conversation? Of course it was requested. It just wasnt part of the normal budget.

My evidence is this. Budgets went up about 3 fold since its creation. Results are bad. And common sense logic says the less administration you have the less you sepnd.

So what is your evidence that ED helps anything? What would be the negative of an ED elimination?
