Maris wasn't a fan favorite. Everybody loved the Babe and Maris wasn't the Babe. As I understand it, Maris wasn't the friendliest guy either. So he probably wasn't making friends with fans, players, coaches or the front office-types. Being unpopular isn't going to get much love thrown your way.
