Also, I agree I reached for Thurmond but I really wanted him and wasn't passing up on taking him early if the chance arose.

Thanks for the commentary, scud. I'll confess there's a bit of a mad scientist plan behind my team so far, but the scheme depends on one of three guys being available for me to grab late in the fifth round. If that doesn't come to pass, then I officially have no idea what the **** I'm doing and I'll resort to reading tea leaves and goat entrails.

Sappy, really like your team so far. Looks like one I would build

keep staying away from me on the commentary, scudly. you hated on my embrace the martian scud in my first ODL and they finished top 8 - pushing the eventual champ to the brink.

the martians fly under the radar - just how we do!!

can't wait to close this team out.

as far as the others go - love jakotay's and chester's squads. and dh has proven to be incredibly wise beyond his years. definitely an awesome new manager.

well shap, here's what I think with only three picks listed:

kareem - can't go wrong. I'm not a huge fan of him in the sim, but it's just because of the fabricated rebounding percentages.

buck - nice compliment for kareem as he's a rebounding machine and is a nice odl player as not everybody can have Rodman...

deron williams is a nice compliment to what else u got goin' on. He's everything you want in a pg for a $42 million league.

You've got a ton of options for your 3 and 2. I gotta see who goes there, but overall, I like the start.

ps - I wouldn't want to play scud's team.

But then, I never do.

I wouldn't be surprised if my team ends up really bad. I started with Stockton and Duncan, because they're two guys I've never had the chance to use and thought I'd try. Problem was all the rebounding studs were gone when it got back to me in the 3rd, so I said screw it - forget rebounding, we'll try a high-scoring, uptempo deal. So Richardson and Issel, who's pretty efficient and a big-time scorer. Quite possible that this team has too many points and not enough rebounding and def; that remains to be seen. But I like trying new things, so we'll see.

Round 1 - Shaq - I feel lucky the 2 guys before me didn't pick him. His eFG% along with his high usage % make him one of the best sim players.

Round 2 - Troy Murphy - never used him before. heard a lot of good things. Think he was on the team that made the finals or won it all last season. Great D, 3s, boards. Would like more mins though as others have pointed out.

Round 3 - Fat - needed a playmaker and and he's a staple in 42 mil leagues. Nothing bad about this guy. Glad I could get a guard to help out the front line with rebounding.

Round 4 - Payton - needed to take some of the scoring burden off the big fella. He can help dish the rock as well. A perfect compliment to Fat in the backcourt.

Round 5 - ?

uva's team is gonna be another team thats hard to deal with. his big men all score, and score in different ways. they shoot from all angles on the court. amare fouls a lot, but the others do not. marion and porter shoot three's, daniels plays the paint, and amare's high efg% is barkley-like. def is sound enough to effect opponent's fg%. who uva drafts in the 5th will depend alot on what he wants his sg to do, and i assume he wants him for dimes and mid-teens usage. this is a team built for marion's style of play.

well, shap, i wasn't avoiding a commentary on your team, just waiting for u to draft the 4th player to get a snapshot of how things are going. 3 is not enough i think to see a clear picture of an owner's intention. given that, the eltonbrand pick is a bit of a puzzler because of the nice pairing of buck and kareem. they compliment eachother, so i assume you'll platoon brand at sf and pf, and use that 5.0 oreb season, but he's only 67 def there i think and not enough of a def specialist to shut down opposing 3-point shooters. if u choose the 86 def brand, he can't play sf at 100% and his usage goes way up. deron can be an offensive stalwalt at times and the usage fits together nicely on this team. just think brand might create a couple of positional difficulties for ya. however, like u said, u have a plan and u stick to it. deron makes things go on this team.

using brand in the mailman at SF model. hopefully it pans out - scudly normally senses trouble...let the second guessing begin!

So if they say that the teams are made in the middle rounds, I'm not quite sure what I have. I feel like a lot hinges on these last 3 players. . .what good is the cake without frosting and a box to put it in?

My level of concern is twitch-inducing. I love the pressure!
11/23/2009 10:15 AM
i sort of look at it this way, emp... a team isn't necessarily "made" in the middle rounds as it is more of an essay of what the first 3 guys are supposed to do. the middle rounds are the body of the team, so, if the no. 1 pick is the main idea and picks 2 and 3 are the topic sentences, and picks 4 and 5 are the supporting details, then the 6th round is the conclusion. seems that's how most salaries are spent too... the inverted triangle.

thou's english lesson for today has endith.

Ok, wise scudmeister, here's another internal struggle - should you compare the numbers for a team you have here to a team you'd be able to put together in an open league? (i'm not necessarily talking about the cookie - i've never used nash and maybe used peja once) I mean, if I compare this to a 50 win team from an open league, should I be worried if I don't outclass them in numbers?
