i think it would be more comparable to sweet sixteen or elite 8.... and im pretty sure those games usually sell out. i could be worng, but im tihinking they do.

regardless, i say the football qfinals sell out within a day or two of them announcing the sale... 8 months prior to the event or whatever.

I think a 8 team playoff is the best way to go. I would love to see 16 teams but 4 extra games is a lot to have to play. The 1st round can be played the week after CT games. Losers of the 1st round can still go to regular bowl games. The final 4 can be played on new years and the championship a week or 2 later. Its so simple that it will never happen.

This just shows why the bowls should have no say in the teams. They have no integrity. TCU should be playing Florida and Boise should be playing Ohio State.

Bad traditions should die.

heres a question for all you " nobody would go to quarterfinal games" folks...

which game do you think would be more profitable?

the eagle one bowl between the 6th place SEC team (maybe number 20 in the country) and the 4th pace Big East team (maybe number 25 in the nation)

or

a quarter final game between the champ of the Big East and the champ of the Pac10?

think about it.

You are comparing apples and oranges there oldave. And professor is right, the opening round NCAA basketball games don't always sell out. I just think that logistically it would be a struggle for fans to go 3 weeks in a row. Basketball is one thing with maybe 8 to 10k fans traveling. You need about 30k+ to help fill up a football stadium. I would be one of those 30k in a one time bowl game. But there is no way I can go 3 weekends in a row.

I would love to see it happen, but these are some of the points that the NCAA will use against it.

where are the apples and oranges?

i KNOW you guys cant go three weeks in a row, but i say the stadiums will fill anyways!

the first week, you will go, and then after that its the senifrekkin finals for freeks sake! it doesnt matter if you go (but you realaly will1) its the final four and it will sell out two years in advance if they let it

if you say 16 teams then i agree that first round is cpmparable to first round of ncaas and may not sell out.

but elite8? yeah. sell out.

Then you let the higher seed host. There is no good reason not to get rid of the bowls.

Is the final 16 really comparable to the first round basketball games. This is the most popular sport in the country. I say they sell out quickly.
12/10/2009 8:16 AM
one of the reasons i dont like 16 is tha it kind of agree with the purists who say one of the great things about college football is the regular season is more important there than pretty much any american sport.

to preserve that, you only let the conference champs in. plus maybe one exception depending how you do it.

So, everyone would know going in that the deal is they really need to win their conference. they may squeak in without winning thier confernce, but that is a longshot. Kind of likw now, they know they need to go undefeated.. they may sneak in with one loss, but to be sure, they need to go undefeated.

and i think that would free up the top teams from big conferences to schedule some good noncon games. as it stands now, the bigboys from the SEC are usually going to avoid tough noncon games because they have so many tough ones in conference. but if those noncon games are used more for seeding than determining national champ, these guys might be more inclined to schedule a tough game or two. they might also do that to help bolster their claim for the wildcard spot. assuming there would be a bunch of one loss teams, then it would come down to SOS, right. so make soem tough noncon games...right?

oh well, like i say, they know we are right, but there is something we arent getting. my guess is it has to do with dead presisdents and not about the total quantity of deadP's, but to whom they are going now and to whom they would go under a playoff. somebody is trying real hard to keep their big ole hunk of the pie.

oldave. i dont want to see fans like you at the "proposed" semis. you're a stand up guy and its nothing personal. but its why the superbowl has gotten to the point of lameness.

things that are wrong with the superbowl:
fans going actually know/care who the halftime show is
quite a few fans in attendance have been to only a few live games before
tons are there simply because they brought clients
many are there simply cuz its "the place to be"
i think something like over 60% of fans in attendance cant name both head coaches
something like over 40% couldn't tell you who played in the previous years superbowl
i can go on and on

**od, i'm not saying you're one of these fans, but whats being proposed draws these type of fans**

when i watch a game i want to see Walter and Rita "alumni" Smith. 80 year old alums decked out in school colors and haven't missed a game in 60 years. I want to see Brett "binge drinker" Daniels. Who just partied friday night till 4am, then made his girlfriend drive him and his buddies 8 hours to catch the game. Thats what makes college football, college football. One side red, one side white. Its fukin intense.

There is NO way the "true" fans travel for this proposal you guys make. During xmas season none the less. So say you're a Texas fan. Got a game in southern california in week #1. then in week two you got a close game in Dallas only 200 miles away. Then you play in the final in florida. Even the tightest budget thats going to put you over $1k. But it will probably run the average fan $2k-$3k.

You gotta remember its xmas too. kids go home (fans and players) even for a day or two. when you have a few weeks to prepare for a team its all fine and dandy. but if you're in a playoff can a coach afford to give the team two days off to go home for xmas?

hmm, fair points, MisterPee.

im not really *that* fan, that you describe. but i am not the college football nut, either.

my thoughts are from the veiwpoint of a fringe veiwer and i think are valid if college football wants to draw in the fringe viewer the way march madness and superbowl do.

of course, maybe that is not what is wanted/ needed? college football is doing pretty okay without me.

i guess to put the show on the other foot i would have to wonder how i would feel if baseball decied to bring in more "fringe veiwers" by making the playoffs a onegame elimination tourney.

i will add this though... even at a huge football game there are only 100,000 people... how many watch a championship or semi-final game on tV? Im thinking alot more than 100,000. not sure what that adds to the equation, but it just felt like it bolstered my case against the evil mrP. ;-)
