Not only is recruiting on Christmas eve inconvenient, it's cause for bad manners to boot.

After many, many years of recruiting during inconvenient times, I have mastered the fine art of carrying on a conversation while quietly recruiting at the same time. The key is proper finger positioning and knowing the response time between button clicks. Concealing the phone in a napkin, sending e-mail to yourself (causing the Blackberry to buzz -- "it's work; give me a minute"), or simply restricting glances at the phone to opportune moments can all be successful with just a little practice
